UMY was established in March 1981 as part of Muhammadiyah, a religious social organization. As a modern Islamic University, UMY’s vision is to create leading and enlightening graduates. Currently, UMY has 23 Undergraduates Programs (Islamic Education, Islamic Counselling and Communication, Islamic Economic and Banking, Law, International Relations, Governmental Studies, Communication, Management, Accounting, Economics, Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Medical Studies, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, English Education, Arabic Education, Japanese Education)  and 9 Postgraduate Programs (Master of Management, Master of Governmental Study, Master of Politics and International Relations, Master of Islamic Studies, Master of Hospital Management, Master of Nursing, Doctorate Program in Psychology of Islamic Education, Doctorate Program in Politic of Islam and Doctorate Program in Management).
