UMY was established in March 1981 as part of Muhammadiyah, a religious social organization. As a modern Islamic University, UMY’s vision is to create leading and enlightening graduates. In line with its vision, UMY does not only direct its students to master the latest science and technology but it also guides the students to develop culturally and religiously in line with Islamic values. As a fast growing higher education institution, UMY offers the best experience in education. Situated in Yogyakarta where culture and tradition are strongly preserved, student studying at UMY will obtain balanced experience between a strong on-campus academic atmosphere and an enriching off campus social life.  

Currently, UMY has 23 Undergraduates Programs (Islamic Education, Islamic Counselling and Communication, Islamic Economic and Banking, Law, International Relations, Governmental Studies, Communication, Management, Accounting, Economics, Agrotechnology, Agribusiness, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology, Medical Studies, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, English Education, Arabic Education, Japanese Education)  and 9 Postgraduate Programs (Master of Management, Master of Governmental Study, Master of Politics and International Relations, Master of Islamic Studies, Master of Hospital Management, Master of Nursing, Doctorate Program in Psychology of Islamic Education and Doctorate Program in Politic of Islam).
