Master of International Affairs

The Master of International Affairs (MIA) prepares students for careers requiring a profound understanding of today’s global policy challenges in government, diplomacy and international organisations. Specialise in one of three areas of concentration: international security, European governance, or human rights and global governance.

The MIA is a two-year, full-time programme in English. Students graduate with a MA degree.


Master of Data Science for Public Policy

The Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) brings together passionate students from both technical and social science backgrounds to deepen their analytical skills and develop an in-depth understanding of the policy world. Learn how to leverage algorithmic decision-making to tackle some of the most complex challenges of our time with data-driven solutions. 

The MDS is a two-year, full-time programme in English. Students graduate with a MSc degree.


Master of Public Policy

The Master of Public Policy (MPP) equips students with the analytical and managerial skills necessary for careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Specialise in either policy analysis or management and organisation.

The MPP is a two-year, full-time programme in English. Students graduate with a MPP degree.


Executive Master of Public Administration

A unique forum for exchange, learning and professional development, the Executive MPA is a flexible programme for experienced professionals who want to acquire innovative tools to tackle the challenges of modern governance. The programme offers working professionals maximum flexibility to tailor the curriculum to individual interests and schedules. Specialise in one of three areas of concentration: leading innovation and managing change, digitalisation and big data, and global governance frontiers.

The Executive MPA can be completed in one year (full time) or two to four years (part time). Students graduate with a MPA degree.


Dual-degree programmes

Want to gain even more international experience? Spend one year at the Hertie School in Berlin and one year at a world-renowned partner institution. At the end of the two-year programme, graduate with a degree from each university. The Hertie School has dual-degree programmes with the following partners:

At the Hertie School, our International Office and Student Life team support students with their arrival in Berlin, finding accommodation in the city, and any and all matters related to bureaucracy. Rolling admissions, holistic evaluation

Admissions for the MIA, MDS, MPP and Executive MPA programmes are on a rolling basis. We have a holistic evaluation process and encourage prospective students from all academic disciplines to apply. All applications for the Hertie School’s programmes must be submitted via the Hertie School's online application portal. You can find detailed information on admissions requirements for all programmes on our website.


Financial aid and scholarships

About half of our students receive tuition waivers covering between 10% and 100% of tuition fees. Financial aid (partial tuition waivers) and scholarships (profile-based full scholarships which often require additional application materials) are granted for the entire period of study and are allocated on a rolling basis up until the final application deadlines. However, we encourage prospective students in need of financial assistance to apply by our priority deadlines. To apply for financial support from the Hertie School, please follow the instructions very carefully in the online application portal.


Application deadlines

MIA, MDS, MPP: Applications are accepted between 1 October and 1 May. The priority deadline is 1 February.

Executive MPA: Applications are accepted between 1 January and 15 August. The priority deadline is 1 July.

Professional development and practical training are built into the curricula of our master's programmes. All MIA, MPP and MDS students must complete a summer internship between their first and second year of study and develop their soft competencies in professional development skills workshops each semester. Those who wish to gain even more work experience may apply for a Professional Year. To help students meet future employers, the school has established relationships with a range of institutions such as ministries, international companies and NGOs.

Schedule a one-on-one career counselling session, and take part in group workshops, alumni panels and other exclusive events.
