Hertie School
About
The Hertie School is a graduate school for public policy, international affairs and data science located in the vibrant heart of Berlin, Germany. The university offers four interdisciplinary and practice-oriented master's programmes taught entirely in English.
The Master of International Affairs (MIA) and Master of Public Policy (MPP) equip students with the practical tools crucial for careers in public service, the private sector, NGOs and international organisations. The Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) trains students in turning data into governance solutions that transform challenges for the common good. The Executive Master of Public Administration empowers experienced professionals to lead teams and organisations, shape decision-making and manage change in the workplace.
As a member of the Global Public Policy Network (GPPN), the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA), and CIVICA – The European University of Social Sciences, the Hertie School prides itself on a dynamic network of students, alumni, faculty and partner institutions around the globe. These networks give students not only the opportunity to integrate a Professional Year into their master's programme but also access to dual-degree programmes with top institutions worldwide.
Germany’s capital is an epicentre for policy-makers and public debates. A hub for both political and cultural events, and a crossroads for travel in Europe and beyond, Berlin draws in people from all around the world. The Hertie School, located in the city's "Mitte" neighbourhood at Friedrichstraße 180, is just minutes away from the German parliament, the Brandenburg Gate and other important political and historic landmarks – a fascinating environment for your studies.
Explore one of the coolest European capitals with your public transport ticket! With a student ID, not only can full-time students use Berlin's extensive network of buses, trams, trains and subway lines to discover the city at a discount, but they can also take part in many cultural and social events at specially reduced rates. Form art, music, and politics to shopping, trying different international cuisines, exploring nature and more, Berlin has something for everyone.
At the Hertie School, our International Office and Student Life team support students with their arrival in Berlin, finding accommodation in the city, and any and all matters related to bureaucracy. Want to learn German during your studies? Take classes at one of our partner language schools. Looking to connect with peers who share your interests? Start a student club! At the Hertie School, there are so many ways to engage with your fellow students and the wider community in Berlin.
Rolling admissions, holistic evaluation
Admissions for the MIA, MDS, MPP and Executive MPA programmes are on a rolling basis. We have a holistic evaluation process and encourage prospective students from all academic disciplines to apply. All applications for the Hertie School’s programmes must be submitted via the Hertie School's online application portal. You can find detailed information on admissions requirements for all programmes on our website.
Financial aid and scholarships
About half of our students receive tuition waivers covering between 10% and 100% of tuition fees. Financial aid (partial tuition waivers) and scholarships (profile-based full scholarships which often require additional application materials) are granted for the entire period of study and are allocated on a rolling basis up until the final application deadlines. However, we encourage prospective students in need of financial assistance to apply by our priority deadlines. To apply for financial support from the Hertie School, please follow the instructions very carefully in the online application portal.
Application deadlines
MIA, MDS, MPP: Applications are accepted between 1 October and 1 May. The priority deadline is 1 February.
Executive MPA: Applications are accepted between 1 January and 15 August. The priority deadline is 1 July.
Professional development and practical training are built into the curricula of our master's programmes. All MIA, MPP and MDS students must complete a summer internship between their first and second year of study and develop their soft competencies in professional development skills workshops each semester. Those who wish to gain even more work experience may apply for a Professional Year. To help students meet future employers, the school has established relationships with a range of institutions such as ministries, international companies and NGOs.
At the Hertie School, we know that career planning is a lifelong matter. Our dedicated career team is here for you – both during your time at the Hertie School and after you graduate. Schedule a one-on-one career counselling session, and take part in group workshops, alumni panels and other exclusive events.
