Extended QS University Rankings: EECA – Coming Soon

Submitted by laura@qs.com on Mon, 10/05/2015 - 11:07

The QS University Rankings: EECA – a ranking of the top universities in Emerging Europe and Central Asia – is being extended this year to feature an additional 50 institutions.

First published in a pilot edition last year, the ranking aims to highlight growing academic excellence in the EECA region, where many nations have placed a high priority on developing and internationalizing their higher education and research frameworks.

This year’s QS University Rankings: EECA, due to be published on 21 October, will see the listing extended from 100 to 150 universities, with a total of 20 countries in the EECA region now represented.

Results to be discussed at Istanbul launch event

The ranking results will be debated at a launch event hosted by Boğaziçi University in Istanbul on 21 October. This will provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss the challenges and opportunities for ambitious universities in the EECA region, strategies for internationalization, and approaches to various areas of collaboration.

Dasha Karzunina, International Research Liaison in the QS Intelligence Unit, anticipates that the results will provide valuable insights for both higher education professionals and prospective students.

“For this second edition of the EECA rankings, we are excited to announce that we have been able to recognize the excellence of an additional 50 universities,” Karzunina says. “We further hope that this edition will be even more interesting to regionally mobile students, as the list of ranked countries now welcomes two additional potential destinations.”

More universities evaluated for inclusion this year

The EECA ranking is created using a methodology adapted from that used for the overall QS World University Rankings®, with universities assessed in nine areas: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, staff with a PhD, papers per faculty member, citations per paper, international faculty members, international students, and web impact.

This year more than 500 universities in the EECA region have been evaluated, with more than 300 ranked and the leading 150 published. To be the first to get the results, join us at the launch event or follow us on Twitter and join the conversation with #QSWUR.

The full suite of QS university rankings can also be accessed via the free rankings app, available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and also for Android.

Click here to discover the top universities for natural sciences in 2017.

Want to study a natural sciences subject at one of the world’s highest performing universities in the field? The QS World University Rankings by Faculty highlights the world’s top universities in five major subject areas: arts & humanities, engineering & technology, life sciences & medicine, natural sciences, and social sciences & management. These rankings are compiled using data on research citations, as well as the results of QS’s global surveys of academics and employers. Read on to discover the 10 top universities this year in the faculty of natural sciences.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

As an institution which counts 34 astronauts among its successful alumni, MIT has firmly established itself as a prestigious place to study, and has now been ranked first in the overall QS World University Rankings® for four years in a row. Its physics department is consistently ranked among the best in the world, while the university’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) offers an expansive range of study unlike any in the country.

2= Harvard University

Currently second in the overall world rankings, Harvard University excels across all faculty areas, including natural sciences. Its department of physics has 10 Nobel Prize winners to its name, while the notable alumni of the university include eight US presidents. In 2004, Harvard created the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, a unique academic community for researchers and students in stem cell science and the largest collaboration of its kind.

2= University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge’s renowned natural sciences faculty offers students the opportunity to gradually hone their knowledge through a series of electives. First-year students choose three fields of natural science (from a choice of eight) and one mathematics specialization from a choice of three. They then select three out of 19 options in their second year, before specializing in a single subject in their third year. Cambridge’s notable alumni in natural sciences are pretty tough to beat, including Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking and Sir Isaac Newton.

4. Stanford University

Another high ranking university for the faculty of natural sciences is Stanford University, which is also currently joint third in the overall world rankings alongside Cambridge. Three Stanford professors in a row won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Meanwhile, independent labs account for 10% of Stanford University’s research, involving about 300 faculty members and 800 students.

5. University of Oxford

Ranked 6th in the overall world rankings, Oxford University was awarded a top ranking in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), a national scheme which evaluates the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Oxford’s four-year course in chemistry includes a fourth year devoted entirely to research, linking the university’s teaching with highly regarded research innovations.

6. ETH Zurich

Switzerland’s ETH Zurich ranks at 9th in the world rankings this year, entering the top 10 for the first time. It has a large department of chemistry and applied biosciences, including an international faculty of 54 research professors and offering excellent research and teaching facilities. 10 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to researchers connected to the university in the field of chemistry. In the field of physics, ETH Zurich conducts research ranging from fundamental physical insights into nature, to the development of innovative technology for society.

7. University of California, Berkeley (UCB)

Ranked 26th in the world overall, the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is known for excellence in a wide range of subjects, including the natural sciences. In the college of chemistry, 13 faculty and alumni have been awarded Nobel Prizes, while 131 are members of the National Academy of Science, and in 1941 two professors at UCB discovered plutonium. The university’s campus is noted for the size and quality of its libraries and laboratories.

 8. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is currently ranked 5th in the world overall, and is renowned for the innovative research conducted by its academics and students. Despite its small size, it claims 31 Nobel laureates among its past and current faculty and alumni. Its mission is to “expand human knowledge and benefit society through research integrated with education”. A recent example of possibly life-changing research is the discovery of an antibody that can attack HIV in new ways.

9= National University of Singapore (NUS)

Ranked 13th in the world overall, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has a large faculty of science, and offers its own award to encourage and recognize undergraduate research – the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Prize. On top of the rigorous training provided by the basic degree programs, the faculty also offers a host of special programs, such as the Special Program in Science and the Science Academic Mentorship.

9= University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo (often known as Todai) is ranked 39th in the overall world rankings this year. Its faculty of science pursues pioneering research whilst also focusing on the nurturing the students who will lead the next generation in science. For example, its Earthquake Research Institute works with the involvement of graduate students on advanced research techniques to further develop knowledge and understanding of seismic/volcanic activities.

5 Scholarship Application Mistakes to Avoid

Submitted by laura@qs.com on Tue, 09/29/2015 - 15:09

There’s a lot you can get right when applying for scholarships – but also a lot you can get wrong! To help you avoid potential pitfalls, we asked the team who run the QS Scholarships scheme to identify some of the most common scholarship application mistakes they see.

1. Failing to answer the scholarship essay question

One of the most common scholarship application mistakes – and one that will really limit your chances of success – is failing to address the scholarship essay question. If you’re applying for multiple scholarships (which is a good idea), you might be tempted to simply use the same essay each time, or submit the personal statement you used for university applications. But the committee assessing the scholarship essays will be looking out for submissions which clearly answer the question set – so it really is worth investing the time in creating a new piece for each scholarship application.

2. Missing the scholarship application deadline

This one should be pretty obvious, but nonetheless a lot of scholarship hopefuls end up missing the deadlines. Needless to say, this dramatically decreases your chances of success. It can be difficult to make all your applications on time, especially when each scholarship scheme has a different deadline. The best strategy is to start researching relevant scholarships well in advance of your intended study date (a full year ahead if possible), and then create a schedule so you can organize your workload and prioritize the most urgent submissions.

3. Leaving mistakes in your scholarship application

You might think the odd typo here or there is no big deal, but the details really can make a big difference. Those reading your scholarship application are likely to be influenced – whether consciously or not – by mistakes such as spelling or grammatical errors, missing punctuation or words, or even just glitches in the layout such as mismatched font sizes. Find a willing friend, family member or mentor with a good eye for detail, and ask her/him to proofread each scholarship application before you send it off.

4. Failing to grab the reader’s attention

Even if you’ve perfectly answered the scholarship essay question, and erased every last error from your text, there’s another challenge to address: the sheer number of applications each committee will receive. To be in with a chance of standing out from the crowd, you need to be sure your application grabs the reader’s attention, and keeps him/her engaged. Kick off with a compelling statement, and ensure your text is lively throughout. Keep paragraphs short and well-connected, and make it memorable through the inclusion of relevant details, quotes or examples.

5. Applying for scholarships you’re not eligible for

There are thousands of scholarship schemes around the world, each with a clear set of eligibility criteria. Sifting through the options to find those which are relevant is a mammoth task, and you might be tempted to send off some applications without thoroughly checking the criteria. Unfortunately, if you apply for scholarships you’re not eligible for, you won’t be successful even if you’re written the world’s best ever application essay. Instead, make use of scholarship listings and databases to identify schemes that closely match your own profile.

And a bonus mistake…

6. Not applying at all!

A surprising number of students simply don’t apply for scholarships at all, due to a plethora of myths and misconceptions. Often, students think they won’t stand a chance of success, that the process will take too long, or that there isn’t a scheme out there to match their own background and ambitions. But when we speak to QS Scholarship winners, their most common piece of advice is simply to remember that everyone else starts out with the same doubts – and to persist in trying anyway. So: apply, apply, apply!
