All universities in the ranking are assessed in five categories, including partnerships with employers, graduate employment rates and alumni outcomes.

Read on to discover 10 (actually 12, as some universities are ranked equally) of the best Australian universities for graduate employability in 2017…

1. University of Sydney

The University of Sydney is the only Australian university to appear in the top 10 of the employability ranking, at an impressive 4th place. How to Find a Killer Masters Degree Abroad

Submitted by sponsored.cont… on Fri, 11/25/2016 - 10:46

Sponsored by the University of Helsinki

Universities worldwide are offering a growing number of master’s degrees specifically designed for international students, often fully taught in English. In Finland, the University of Helsinki has just launched 28 international master’s programs – one example of the rapidly increasing number of options available to students seeking a master’s abroad.

With more possibilities than ever before, how should you decide on the best master’s degree for you? Here are six essential factors to consider when finding and comparing master’s degrees abroad…

1. Be smart about location.

When deciding on a study destination, consider a wide range of factors, such as cultural atmosphere, tuition fees and living standards. Depending on your personality and aspirations, you’ll want to prioritize different aspects of local life. Do you enjoy vegan food? Hiking? Live music? Exploring new landscapes? Connect with current students online to get a feel for the lifestyle. And if you’re hoping to work alongside or after your studies, make sure there are relevant opportunities and review the visa regulations.

2. Check out subject rankings.

As well as consulting international rankings tables, take a look at specialized subject rankings to discover which institutions are at the top of your field. The University of Helsinki, for instance, ranks 91st in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. But how well does it fare in your subject area? If you’re interested in studying geography, Earth and marine sciences, English literature or economics (amongst other subjects), it could be a particularly good option for your master’s abroad. So, don’t neglect the subject rankings; they’re a great way to discover new options and focus your search.

3. Keep an eye out for universities that offer grants.

Studying a master’s abroad inevitably involves an investment… And a grant could really help you slash through the costs. The University of Helsinki offers generous grants covering between 50% and 100% of tuition fees, in addition to living stipends, awarded to students on the basis of academic merit. Could you be one of the next happy recipients? Find out more here.

4. Choose a course with a practical focus.

This is a pretty big one. Your master’s degree should prepare you for work in the real world – and this is not always guaranteed. When reading course descriptions, ask yourself:

  • Does the course involve applying theory to real-life situations?
  • Will I develop skills which are valued by employers?
  • Are there opportunities to gain practical experience?

When discussing the program with the university, ask how this particular master’s abroad will prepare you for the job market, and decide for yourself how convincing the answer sounds.

5. Find a university with a good language center.

While your master’s abroad may be taught in English, this is a great opportunity to increase your employability by learning a second (or third/fourth/fifth) language. Your university should be able to help you with this. Does it have a language center? How big is it, how many languages are offered, and how easy is it to join a course? The language center at the University of Helsinki employs more than 70 full-time staff members, offering training in over 30 languages!

6. Ensure that the university mirrors your personality and priorities.

Your number one priority should be to find a master’s degree and university that resemble you and your preoccupations and values. Don’t be afraid of being introspective: what do you care the most about? Is it your earning potential? Problem-solving? Expressing your creativity? Improving people’s lives?

Whatever it is, make sure your institution’s ethos reflects your own. If you’re passionate about sustainability, the University of Helsinki could be your perfect match, being well-known for its research focus in this field. Many programs at the school involve contact with public policy organizations and businesses to find credible solutions to global crises. Sound like your kind of challenge?

Sleep on it.

QS Graduate Employability Rankings – Methodology

Submitted by staff.writer@qs.com on Mon, 11/21/2016 - 15:30

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings is an annual ranking of universities around the world, celebrating institutions which are committed to and effective in preparing students for the workplace. First published as a pilot edition in 2015, the ranking now features 300 institutions, providing the world’s students with a unique tool by which to compare university performance in this area. Each institution’s total score is compiled based on the following five indicators.

Employer reputation (30%)

Employer reputation is measured using a global survey, in which graduate employers are asked to identify the institutions producing the best graduates in their field. For the 2017 edition of the ranking, the opinions of over 37,000 employers were considered.

Alumni outcomes (20%)

To assess alumni outcomes, QS has sourced the alma maters of those included in 61 lists of highly successful individuals, each measuring desirable outcomes in a particular walk of life. In total, QS analyzed the educational pathways of 21,000 of the world’s most innovative, creative, wealthy, entrepreneurial, and/or philanthropic individuals, to establish which universities are producing world-changing graduates. To acknowledge the fact that many of these lists are produced by research and media outlets based in the US and UK, a weighting formula has been applied that lends extra weight to ‘international’ submissions.

Employer partnerships (25%)

This indicator combines two components to assess institutions’ engagement with industry partners in research and other areas. First, it considers the number of distinct global companies collaborating with each institution in at least three research papers indexed by Scopus. Employment-related partnerships not related to research are also considered. Second, scores are adjusted in proportion to the number of faculty members employed. The 2017 edition of the ranking considers university collaborations with 2,000 top global companies – four times as many as in the pilot edition.

Employer-student connections (15%)

This indicator involves summing the number of employers who are actively present on a university’s campus, providing motivated students with an opportunity to network and acquire information. Employer presence also increases the opportunity of students achieving career-launching internships and research opportunities. This ‘active presence’ may take the form of participating in careers fairs, organizing company presentations, or any other self-promoting activities.

Graduate employment rate (10%)

This indicator is the simplest, but essential for any understanding of how successful universities are at nurturing employability. It involves measuring the proportion of graduates (excluding those opting to pursue further study or unavailable to work) in full- or part-time employment within 12 months of graduation. The scores in this category are calculated by considering the difference between each institution’s employment rate and the national average. This accounts for the fact that a university’s ability to foster employability will be affected by the economic performance of the country in which it is situated.

The results are published in an interactive online table, which can be sorted by each of the five indicators listed above. To access the full functionality of the results table, including the option to view direct comparisons of specific universities, you first need to log in or register as a site member (completely free).

Stanford Ranked World’s Top University for Graduate Employability

Submitted by laura@qs.com on Mon, 11/21/2016 - 14:15

The Silicon Valley-based and famously entrepreneurial Stanford University tops the first full edition of the QS Graduate Employability Rankings, published today. Following last year’s pilot, this year’s expanded edition features 300 leading universities across the world, all assessed in five categories related to graduate employability.

US universities claim five of the top 10 spots, joined by both halves of the UK’s Oxbridge, and one entry each for China, France and Australia.

Stanford and MIT, first and second in the employability ranking, also lead the latest overall QS World University Rankings®, in reversed order. But in general the employability ranking follows a different pattern, with a more diverse spread of nations featured at the top, and a notably strong performance for STEM-focused institutions.

Also of note is the prominent representation of Chinese universities. Tsinghua University, in third place, is joined within the top 20 by Peking University (joint 11th) and Fudan University (14th).

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2017 features 37 of the best UK universities for graduate employability, of which 14 appear in the global top 100. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two halves of Oxbridge are the UK’s leading representatives, reflecting the strength of their reputation among employers. However, the ranking is not only based on reputation; it also considers alumni outcomes, employment rates, industry partnerships and student-employer connections.

Here’s the UK’s top 10 in this year’s employability rankings…

1. University of Cambridge

The leading UK institution for graduate employability in 2017 is the University of Cambridge, which places 5th in the list. Cambridge graduates are highly sought-after, and the university has the top score in the ‘employer reputation’ indicator. It also receives a high score for ‘alumni outcomes’, thanks to its many successful and renowned alumni. Famous Cambridge graduates include Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin and Sylvia Plath.

Ranked 8th in the world for graduate employability, the University of Oxford has a list of successful graduates to rival Cambridge, including 27 British Prime Ministers, and prominent figures such as Oscar Wilde, Helen Fielding, Hugh Grant, Rosamund Pike and Lewis Carroll. Coming second behind Cambridge for employer reputation, Oxford ranks slightly higher than its competitor for alumni outcomes, and reports that 95% of undergraduate leavers are employed or in further study within six months after graduation.

3. Imperial College London

Imperial College London is ranked joint 20th in the graduate employability rankings, and is the highest-ranked representative from the UK capital. Imperial encourages students to get involved in a range of placements, internships and volunteering programs (such as Imperial Plus) to help them gain skills and experiences valued by employers.
