Postgraduate education is an important component of the University’s research strategy. Of a total of 47 448 registered students in 2017, 28% were postgraduate students. Of these 55.2 % were black students and 4 008 were international students. In 2016, a total of 1 812 master’s and 302 doctoral students graduated from the University of Pretoria. These students gain experience by means of the research projects that they undertake and contribute considerably to the University’s status as a research university.
