UNLV is a doctoral-degree-granting institution of approximately 29,000 students and more than 3,000 faculty and staff. Founded in 1957, the university offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degree programs. UNLV is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

The University of Nevada has 15 major academic units and after being noted for its strong emphasis on science and technology, business management, and the law programs, the university is classified a "research-intensive university" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
