The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) owes its existence to the farsighted vision of its founder Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. Initially, three engineering and technological institutions were established namely, BENCO in 1919, MINMET in 1923 and TECHNO in 1932. The first-ever bachelor degree in Ceramics, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgy and Mining Engineering and Pharmacy in India were pioneered at this institute while Pharmacy was the first in Southeast Asia. Later, BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO were merged to form Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) in 1968. In 2012, IT-BHU was converted into an institute of national importance; Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi.
IIT (BHU) comprised of 15 Departments and 3 interdisciplinary Schools, offers 4-year B.Tech. program in 10 disciplines, 5-year B.Arch program in 1 discipline, 5-year IDD programs in 14 disciplines, 2-year M.Tech./M.Pharm programs in 14 disciplines and Ph.D programs in 19 disciplines. The institute has been admitting students to undergraduate programs exclusively through joint entrance examination (JEE) since 1972, to PG programs through Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering (GATE)/Graduate Pharmacy Admission Test (GPAT) and has been consistently ranked amongst the topmost engineering institutions in the Country. Till date, the institute has produced a total of 34,871 degree holders. Apart from implementing rigorous academic programs, the institute has been consistently promoting research on thrust areas of various engineering and science disciplines. Our students have always been the first liking of industries. Our alumni have excelled in every sphere of their life, serving top-most positions not only in India, throughout the world.
