A historically black college in Virginia, Hampton University was initially founded to provide education to those released from slavery. For nearly 50 years, it also ran a program to educate Native Americans. Today, it’s home to the country’s oldest museum of the African diaspora - the Hampton University Museum. Approximately 4,500 students are now enrolled at the university. Two-thirds of the student body are female, while over 90 percent identify as black.
