Historically, the school played an important role in the development of the Art Deco movement in the 1920s. Among the school’s notable alumni are Jean-Paul Goude - former art director of Esquire - and Golden Lion award-winner Annette Messager. 

The school is located on Rue d’Ulm in Paris and there are French expressions which translate as “to have frequented the street of Ulm” or “to have done Ulm” which are used to refer to students from the Ecole Nationale Superieure.
