Augustana University

The largest private university in South Dakota, Augustana University is affiliated to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has approximately 2,000 students enrolled. The university offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 50 subjects, in addition to pre-professional training in fields such as nursing. The top five most popular academic majors at the university are nursing, biology, business administration, elementary education and psychology. 

Teaching at Augustana University occurs across two 15-week semesters, as well as an optional summer term of eight weeks. 99 percent of the university’s students are learning at undergraduate level, while 59 percent of the student body are female. Enrolled students are primarily from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

Despite the university’s Lutheran connections, there is no requirement for students at the university to identify with that religious affiliation. However, the majority of students do identify as Christians. The proportion of international students at the university varies from year-to-year but is typically around five percent.
