The National Institute of Technology, Puducherry is an institution of national importance and is one among the ten new NITs sanctioned by the Government of India in 2009. NIT Puducherry is situated at the coastal enclave of Karaikal which is a part of the Union Territory of Puducherry in South India. With its commitment to social and educational upliftment in the local region, NIT Puducherry admits students (from 2010 onwards) through a 50% reservation policy for candidates native to the Union Territories of Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar. The remaining seats are open for candidates from across India. Although a relatively young institution, NIT Puducherry is strongly committed to producing accomplished and socially responsible professionals who can contribute effectively to the needs of society and the nation today. Equipped with highly qualified and experienced faculty, and its steadily expanding training and educational facilities, NIT Puducherry strives to foster a conducive environment for cutting-edge research, collaboration and professional training. The institute currently comprises of a total of 62 faculty members and 31 non-teaching staff members. The student strength consists of 1147 students out of which 126 are doctoral students. The teaching curricula for various disciplines are frequently revised and updated to incorporate contemporary developments and industry trends. In addition to technical and scientific training, the students also have opportunities to hone their soft skills through team work on projects, presentations and other professional and extracurricular activities. The constantly changing requirements of a growing institution provide ample opportunities for student innovation and initiatives. This institute website along with many laboratory experiments are a result of these initiatives. In the coming years, the institution is geared to scale new heights and to constantly develop a synergy between teaching, research, training and consulting activities.
