The University of Trento came into being in 1962 with the foundation of the University Institute of Social Sciences (Istituto universitario superiore di Scienze sociali); it was then changed into the Free University of Trento in 1972, financially supported by the local government, and then into a state University in 1983 with the name of Università degli Studi di Trento.Today, the University of Trento is a young and dynamic university with 16,000 students and about 1,200 people working as faculty and administrative and technical staff. Teaching is supported by a high level scientific research in different fields, with areas of distinguished quality at both a national and an international level. Prestigious research centres have been founded in recent years: in particular, the Centre for Integrative Biology (CIBIO), the Centre for Mind/Brain Sciences (CIMeC) and the Microsoft Research-University of Trento Centre for Computational and Systems Biology (CoSBi) and the interdepartmental research centre for Biomedical technologies (BIOtech).It is very important, especially for a small to medium-sized university like Trento, to create partnerships with distinguished universities and research centres all around the world in order to better face the challenges of global competition. This is why over the years the University of Trento has created a rich cooperation network which allows itself to integrate its educational opportunities and to promote fruitful relationships in teaching and research. The large number of bilateral cooperation agreements has led the University of Trento to be well-known and appreciated at an international level and to offer its students a lot of opportunities to study and work abroad, as well as an international environment 'at home'.
