Entry requirements
Individual degree programs may have their own entry requirements, but there are a number of entrance guidelines which apply across the Lyle School of Engineering.

English language requirements
All international students who do not have English as a first language (and graduate applicants who haven’t gained their undergraduate at an American university) must submit a TOEFL test or equivalent








Students have access to a range of state-of-the-art facilities at Lyle School of Engineering, including:


Fondren Library

Open 24 hours a day Monday-Thursday with shorter hours on Fridays and weekends during term times.
The Fondren Library includes a café, IT help desk and research help center. A number of classrooms, study spaces and lockers are also available, as well as printing and copying services.

Student accommodation
There is a range of accommodation available on campus with priority given to first-year students. Most accommodation is equipped with all necessary amenities, including common areas for studying and socializing, laundry rooms, and a 24-hour access card system, so students can come and go as they please.
There is also a Resident Assistant and Residential Community Director on staff to help students living on campus.  

Dedman Center
With two sand volleyball courts, a climbing wall, indoor recreational space for a range of classes and activities, indoor and outdoor pools including The Falls, a pool complete with 7-foot waterfalls, students will always have something to enjoy.
The Moody Auditorium is a 7,000-seat arena which is home to SMU basketball.

McFarlin Memorial Auditorium

Opened in 1926, the McFarlin Memorial Auditorium is one of the oldest buildings on campus and is a proscenium style theatre with over 2,000 seats.

International Student Services
ISSS are specialist support staff for international students and offer help with immigration services. The office arranges pre-arrival information for new students and helps with any issues that might arise once students are enrolled at the school.

Counselling Services
Counselling services are available to all students free of charge and are confidential outpatient services specializing in a range of areas.


Caring Community Connections
This service provides support by listening to specific problems students might have and connecting them with the resources they might need.


Office of the Chaplain and Religious Life
Students of all faiths are welcome at Lyle School of Engineering. The Office of the Chaplain and Religious Life is open to students of any faith who wish to seek help, including counselling and spiritual direction.







As a campus university based in Dallas, Texas, students living on-campus have the best of both worlds, with a safe and secure living environment in the heart of a large and exciting city.


Campus security
is very important, and SMU has its own police officers on campus who patrol the campus at all times and are contactable via blue-light phones which can be found around campus. Should students be feeling unsafe at any time, they can call SMU Safety Escort, who offer free rides on campus from 7pm to 3am. They can also contact SMU Rides who provide help on and off campus 24 hours a day.

Individual degree programs may have their own entry requirements, but there are a number of entrance guidelines which apply across the Lyle School of Engineering.

Graduate applicants must have a minimum 3.000 GPA (on a 4.000 scale) for all of their previous undergraduate or graduate studies.

For those applying for doctoral studies, they must also have three letters of recommendation.

For all doctoral applicants, and for those applying for certain master’s degrees, students will also need an official GRE graduate school admission test score.

English language requirements
All international students who do not have English as a first language (and graduate applicants who haven’t gained their undergraduate at an American university) must submit a TOEFL test or equivalent with a minimum score of 550 on the paper examination, 213 on the computer examination or 80 overall score on the online examination. A score of 6.5 or better on the IELTS also qualifies.




As a university, SMU has an excellent reputation for graduate outcomes.

In 2017, a PayScale report ranked it in the top 21 percent of universities in the US for student return on investment. The median salary was nearly $80,000 within five years of graduates beginning their career.

SMU has an excellent career development program, and Dallas-area businesses offer SMU students more than 4,400 internships and placements every year.  

The Lyle School of Engineering also boasts the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership, which helps connect students with opportunities including mentoring relationships, internships, placements and even job opportunities. The Center hosts networking events, workshops and recruiting events, and can help individual students with mock interviews, resumes and interview prep.

Once students leave Lyle, they are still part of the SMU alumni network.
