How your business education could solve global challenges

Whether your dream career is in the public or private sector, an understanding of global forces and how they can influence your business will be essential.

At Tufts University’s Fletcher School they ensure graduates are ready to address the demands of a fast-changing global environment, thanks to a curriculum that goes far beyond textbook theory.

Students are immersed in the complexities of international business through experiential learning and the development of ‘contextual intelligence’, the ability to synthesise political, technological, and social factors into strategic decisions.

What you gain from a global perspective

One of the defining qualities of Fletcher’s global business programmes is their commitment to teaching students how business is inextricably linked to global trends.

The curriculum is designed so that even the most local business challenges are placed within a broader international context, whether it’s supply chain disruptions due to tariffs, evolving standards in sustainability, or the impact of migration on talent pools.

Through class discussions and real-world projects, students learn to navigate the intersection of business, politics, and society. These skills are invaluable if you’re aiming to lead in multinational companies or international organisations.

A practical experience that puts you in the boardroom

Fletcher’s approach emphasises experiential learning. Students participate in hands-on projects, internships, and capstone assignments that solve real challenges faced by businesses and communities worldwide.

Graduates become adept at launching startups, driving sustainability initiatives, and developing policy at major corporations.
Ali Schmidt-Fellner, a Fletcher alum, attributes her ability to question assumptions and drive strategic impact at JPMorgan Chase to her multidisciplinary education.

She regularly draws upon this way of thinking in her work today as executive director of community and local impact on the consumer and business intelligence team at JPMorganChase.

“We're tasked with managing the narrative on financial health for the firm and understanding how consumers are doing in the face of uncertain economic times, how small businesses are doing and using data to unlock insights,” said Schmidt-Fellner.

“I'm trying to speak the language of data and translate that down to the local level for stakeholders such as policymakers, journalists and bankers, who can use it for local decision-making.”

How a specialised business degree gives you the tools you need to succeed

Fletcher’s suite of global business degrees allows students to choose the path that best fits their ambitions and backgrounds:

  • Master of International Business (MIB): This two-year programme combines rigorous business training with broad exposure to global affairs, preparing graduates to drive change in finance, consulting, and strategic management. Recognised among the top 20 global programmes, the MIB offers both full-time and part-time options and does not require the GRE/GMAT, making it accessible to international applicants.
  • MIB: Quantitative Methods (STEM-Designated): For those interested in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and investment management, the STEM-designated track offers deep expertise in quantitative analysis. Students learn to merge technical skills with contextual insight, positioning themselves to address digital transformation and financial inclusion — critical issues in both Chinese and global markets.
  • Master of Global Business Administration (GBA): Designed for working professionals, this flexible online programme combines MBA fundamentals with global affairs content, including two in-person immersions. The GBA enables mid-career students to apply what they learn directly to their professional roles.
  • International Business Field of Study: For those pursuing a master’s degree in international law, diplomacy, or global affairs, this flexible field of study allows students to add business expertise to their academic portfolio, broadening career options in consulting, technology, and financial services.

An alumni network that’s making an impact

Fletcher’s diverse student body and extensive alumni network create opportunities for lifelong connections. Students learn alongside peers and faculty from different countries and professional backgrounds, exchanging ideas and building relationships that can open doors in every corner of the globe.

For Chinese students, this network is particularly valuable, providing insights into international markets and access to partners and mentors for future ventures.

The success of Fletcher graduates demonstrates the long-term value of a business education rooted in global context. Alumni have launched innovative businesses, led sustainability initiatives, and influenced policy at leading organisations.

Their careers reflect a commitment to creating lasting value for communities and industries worldwide. The emphasis on practical application and global perspective ensures their students are ready to meet the challenges of the future with confidence and skill.

If this sounds like an ideal fit for your ambition, the Fletcher School might be the perfect place to take that next step towards a senior leadership role that can shape the future of global business.
