Founded in 1984 by Dr. G. Viswanathan – the Chancellor of the university – Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is one of India’s premier institutions. Since 1984, the student body has grown from 180 students to 38,000 students from across the world.
There are four campuses in India: Vellore, Chennai, Amaravati, and Bhopal.
Eco-friendly in design and equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, they provide a favorable atmosphere for learning and living.
VIT has developed a student-centered success culture and ensures high quality learning, teaching and research experiences. The university offers a range of world class extracurricular facilities and support to students, as well as a strong Alumni Network.
India’s Government gave VIT Institution of Eminence (IoE) status in recognition of its excellence in research and academics.
VIT has recorded a consistent increase in the quality and quantity of research publications.
Recognition from Web of Science (WoS), the world’s most trusted database for the “India Research Excellence – Citation Awards 2019” under the Deemed or Private University category. VIT is the first Indian institution to receive QS four star in overall category and five stars in teaching, employability, facilities, innovation and inclusiveness.
Three VIT subjects are within the top 550 QS World University Rankings by Subject: CS & IT; Electrical & Electronics; Chemistry. VIT has national accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Govt. of India with A grade. Programs at VIT are taught in English, but VIT also has the Chinese Language Centre.

- VIT mentors students through initiatives including the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) ™, Curriculum for Applied Learning (CAL) ™ and Project-Based Learning (PBL).
- VIT provides seed money to carry out research in emerging and socially relevant fields.
VIT has 200 student clubs and chapters, student counsellors, grievance cell, woman grievance cell, student mentoring system, digital library, digital parents monitoring systems, 24/7 security on campus and accommodation.
There are 45 languages spoken on campus, contributing to the university’s rich and cultural diversity.

Admission is based on merit and course availability. NRI candidates can apply in two ways: direct admission and through VITEEE.
