The University of Rome Tor Vergata is a relatively young university (Established in 1982) but, despite its young age, has already reached high quality standards in Italy and Europe. Tor Vergata is located in the south-east metropolitan area of Rome, on a very large campus with an extension of about 600 hectares, and consists of six different Faculties: Economics, Engineering, Humanities, Law, Medicine and Sciences. The university has approximately 44,000 students, 1571 professors, 1066 administrative and technical staff, and offers a total of 126 undergraduate programs, 120 Master programs and 79 Ph.D. programs. Research is carried out in 27 Departments and in 27 Inter-Departmental Research Centers. The university is committed to excellence in research and teaching, as witnessed by the research awards, the numbers of research contracts that are currently active, the significant financial support and the real economic, social and cultural benefits delivered by the advanced research and teaching activities carried out in the university. The University Campus provides a first-rate and stimulating research environment, and has been able to attract on its premises a few other important external research institutions, such us the CNR (Italian National Research Council) Tor Vergata Research Area, INAF (the Italian National Astrophysics Institute) and the Main Headquarters of ASI (the Italian Space Agency). The close proximity and research ties with other distinguished research centers, such us ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Environment), ESA-ESRIN (the European Space Agency Center for Earth Observation), the Astronomical Observatory of Rome and the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), makes the University of Rome Tor Vergata a unique research environment in the most advanced scientific areas. Recently, a research consortium between the Italian Ministry of University and Research, the Regione Lazio (Lazio Regional District), CNR, ENEA, INFN and the University of Rome Tor Vergata has been created to develop a free-electron laser (FEL), The new free-electron laser will bring together physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers in advanced research and experiments for the structural assessment of inorganic and biological material at the atomic level. In Tor Vergata, the quality of teaching hinges upon the university's commitment to research, and the entire learning experience takes place in relevant, cutting-edge fields of study. Through the provision of excellent modern facilities, innovative approaches to teaching and assessment, and high levels of academic and professional support, students are encouraged to take an active role in their own development. Besides teaching and advanced research institutions, the University Campus hosts also one of the most modern University Hospitals in Italy (Tor Vergata Polyclinic), with state-of-the-art medical equipments. Furthermore, in the near future, part of the University Campus will feature the innovative City of Sport project, designed by the internationally renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, which will contribute even more facilities on campus for students, faculties and visitors.
