Southern Federal University was established by Order of the Russian Federal Government in November 23, 2006. Southern Federal University, along with Siberian Federal University, was founded in 2006 as the pilot project of new federal universities establishments. Currently, there are only nine federal universities in Russia. Six of them were founded in 2010. Southern Federal University has a strong scientific and educational potential.
