This year’s QS Top 50 Under 50 will be published on 24 November, here on TopUniversities.com – and this year the list is being extended to include the “Next 50 Under 50”, highlighting even more of the world’s top universities under 50 years old.

First published in 2012, the QS Top 50 Under 50 was developed to shine a spotlight on universities which have succeeded in reaching the top levels of the global rankings in a remarkably short space of time. Based on the most recent edition of the QS World University Rankings®, the Top 50 Under 50 lists the world’s leading universities established within the last half century, in order of their appearance in the overall rankings.

Currently, the list is topped by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which was established in 1991, and which in 2014/15 ranked 39th in the world. The current top five young universities also includes two universities based in Hong Kong and two in South Korea – the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), KAIST – Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and City University of Hong Kong.

But while these Asian Tigers dominate the top of the table, the ranking also serves to highlight rapid progress made by young universities all around the world. The last edition featured universities in 24 different countries; among these, the largest share by far was claimed by Australia, which occupied a fifth of all spaces.

This year QS is extending the list, with plans to publish the “Next 50 Under 50” for the first time. This will extend the spotlight to even more of the higher education world’s ‘bright young things’ – young universities making their mark on the international stage with striking speed, challenging the long-established institutions which have previously tended to dominate the rankings tables.

The new edition of the QS Top 50 Under 50 will be launched at the first QS Young Universities Forum, a one-day event being hosted in Melbourne in association with Deakin University, one of the current top 50. To be the first to get the results, join us at the free launch event, or follow the conversation on Twitter and Facebook with #QSWUR.
