Top 10 MBA Programs for a Career in Marketing 2021

Released today, the QS MBA by Specialization Rankings 2021 provide insight into the world’s top business schools and MBA programs for seven different areas of specialism.

Schools are ranked based on employer reputation and research strength for each of the seven areas, as well as the number of career placements MBA graduates from the school have achieved in the field. Each of these three indicators is assigned a score out of 100.

Stanford Graduate School of Business has been ranked as the best business school in the world for specializing in marketing yet again, with 18 percent of graduates going into a relevant industry. The complete top 10 can be found below.

Kicking off the top 10 for MBA marketing specializations is Fuqua School of Business’s MBA program which soared up the rankings this year from 28th to 10th.

Duke’s concentration in marketing on the Daytime MBA of a combination of six marketing and non-marketing elective courses from a list associated with one of three options:

·   Product Management

·   Market Analysis and Strategy

·   Dual Marketing Concentration (10 courses total)

All courses meet for 2 hours and 15 minutes, twice per week.  Each term is 6 weeks long, rather than quarters or semesters. Courses include Consumer Behavior and Independent Study.

The estimated first-year cost of attendance for the Daytime MBA Class of 2022 is US$97,330. Fuqua’s stats for the 2022 class boasts 408 students, of which 46 percent are female, 38 percent are from a minority, and students have an average of 5.6 years’ work experience.

 

9) McCombs School of Business

McCombs’s MBA program scored very highly for career placements and research strength.

The Marketing Fellows program gives selected McCombs MBA students committed to pursuing leadership in marketing the opportunity to develop their marketing acumen and management skills through a combination of focused curriculum and consulting projects. The program is student-led and managed, with support from CCIMS and Marketing faculty.

Fellows who are selected to participate register for the weekly, two- to three-hour “Marketing Fellows” course during their 2nd and 3rd semesters of their MBA program.

Students will pay $16,715 per semester on the two-year program.

 

8) Harvard Business School

HBS’s MBA program achieved a perfect score for employer reputation and a very high score for research strength. It has the lowest number of students entering the marketing industry post-graduation in the top 10 (12 percent), although this is likely explained by Harvard’s very large class size (938 in the 2019 graduating class).

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, tuition fees for the 24-month program are US$111,818. Marketing is a required module in the first year of the MBA, and HBS offers many second-year electives for students who want to pursue marketing, such as Creating Brand Value, E-Commerce and a Digital Marketing Workshop field course.

 

7) Carlson School of Management

Carlson’s MBA program scored very highly for career placements and research strength. In fact, Carlson boasts the highest percentage of graduates going into marketing in the top 10.

Minnesota residents will pay approximately US$47,830 in total per annum, with international students paying US$59,488.

 

6) Kellogg School of Management

Kellogg has long been considered one of the best business schools for a marketing specialization. The program achieved a perfect score in employer reputation. Around 13 percent of Kellogg students went into a marketing career post-graduation.

The MBA program at Kellogg, located in Evanston, Illinois, offers both a one-year and two-year option. The tuition fee for the one-year program is US$$103,316 and for the two-year program it is US$149,742. Students on the MBA program have the option to major in marketing, with access to Kellogg’s award-winning marketing department (three members of faculty have won the Marketing Educator of the Year award from the American Marketing Association).

 

5) USC Marshall

Marshall’s MBA program scored very highly for career placements and research strength – but the program has also soared up the ranking this year from 22nd in 2019. It also has the second-highest proportion of students going into marketing careers in the top 10, with 32 percent.

Students in USC Marshall’s MBA program are required to take Marketing Management as part of their core. Principles of Marketing is also a business foundation and Advanced Marketing Management is an elective option. And students could also get involved in relevant career clubs, including the Graduate Marketing Association (GMA).

Tuition and program fees for Marshall’s MBA program 2020/21 are estimated to be $124,715.20.

 

4) Kelley School of Business

Kelley’s MBA program scored very highly in the career placements and research strength ranking indicators. It has the third-highest proportion of students going into marketing careers with 29 percent.

Located in Bloomington, Indiana, the MBA program at Kelley takes two-years to complete, with a summer internship. For the 2020–21 academic year, Kelley Direct Tuition and fees are $1,380 per credit hour. The MBA program consists of 54 credit hours. MBA students at Kelley have the option of majoring (or minoring) in marketing to really tailor their degree to their career goals.

 

3) UCLA Anderson School of Management

In the bronze medal position for yet another year is the two-year, full-time MBA program at UCLA Anderson. The program score very highly in employer reputation, with a decent 26 percent of graduates going into marketing careers.

UCLA have an estimated MBA student budget of US$98,699 per academic year (subject to change). Graduates who go into marketing can expect median starting salaries of around US$120,000. Popular marketing recruiters for UCLA include Adobe, Disney, General Mills and Microsoft. 

 

2) Michigan Ross School of Business

Michigan Ross’s MBA program scored very highly for research strength. 18 percent of Ross MBA graduates went onto careers in marketing, with companies such as Amazon, P&G and PepsiCo.

The program is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and takes two years to complete. The tuition fees (per year) are US$66,048 for Michigan residents and US$71,048 for non-Michigan residents. Ross has a marketing club specifically for MBA students, as well as a yearly seminar series with the marketing department holding lecturers every Friday.

 

1) Stanford Graduate School of Business

Taking first place in the MBA specialization rankings for marketing for another year is Stanford. Stanford’s program earned a perfect score in employer reputation, with 18 percent of students going into the marketing industry post-graduation.

Based in Stanford, California, the two-year program has tuition fees of US$73,062 per academic year (US$146,124 in total). Students can take marketing electives in their second year, plus join the Marketing Club which hosts a number of networking and career development events throughout the academic year.

In joint ninth place is Imperial College Business School, whose MBA program scored highly for employer reputation and research strength. 12 percent of Imperial graduates landed jobs in operations management.

Imperial’s full-time MBA, located in London, one of Europe’s main business hubs, combines business knowledge with technology-driven teaching. Tuition fees amount to £54,500 (approx. US$70,760).

9=) HEC Montréal

Next is the MBA program at HEC Montréal, which received high scores for research strength and career placements. 17 percent of HEC graduates went on to careers in operations management.

Offered in English or French, the one-year program boasts an excellent employment rate and a wide global network. Tuition fees vary depending on applicants’ nationality: US$6,533 for students from Quebec, France or Belgium; US$14,035 for Canadian students; and US$36,769 for all other international students.

 

8) INSEAD

Next is INSEAD, whose accelerated MBA program received a perfect score for employer reputation and high scores across all other indicators.

Conducted on the school’s two campuses in Europe and Asia, INSEAD’s full-time MBA offers a fully multicultural experience in just 10 months. The first part of the program is built around 14 core courses, while the second allows students to customize their curriculum with a wide range of electives. Costs amount to €80,800 (approx. US$94,750).

 

7) Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business

Placing seventh is the full-time MBA from Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business. The program scored high for research strength and career placements, with a strong 28 percent of graduates landing operations management positions.

The two-year program offers an intimate academic environment of only 60 students per year, as well as experiential opportunities in the US and abroad. Tuition for the Penn State Smeal MBA costs US$27,442 for Pennsylvania residents and US$43,800 for out-of-state residents.

 

6) Warwick Business School

In sixth place is Warwick Business School, whose MBA program scored high in career placements. 15 percent of Warwick graduates went on to careers in operations management.

Warwick’s 12-month program gives students personalized career guidance, hands-on experiential learning with businesses, and the opportunity to study overseas. Tuition amounts to £43,950 (approx. US$57,124).

 

5) MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business

Halfway through the list is MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business, whose MBA program earned high scores for both career placements and research strength. An impressive 37 percent of MIP graduates landed jobs in operations management.

MIP’s full-time International MBA is intensive and highly diverse, allowing students to gain business skills on a global scale. The program is one of the most affordable on the list, with costs capped at €37,000 (approx. US$43,433).

 

4) W.P. Carey School of Business

Just missing out on a top three spot is the full-time MBA from W.P. Carey School of Business, which achieved high scores for career placements and research strength. A whopping 38 percent of Carey graduates went on to careers in operations management – the second-highest percentage in the top 10.

The Carey 21-month MBA is built around eight concentrations and four specializations. Tuition is US$58,700 for Arizona residents; US$96,500 for out-of-state residents, and US$101,100 for international students.

 

3) IE Business School

Placing third is the International MBA from IE Business School, scoring high in employer reputation and career placements. 11 percent of IE graduates landed jobs in operations.

45 percent of IE’s International MBA is customizable, offering students personalized teaching for their individual needs. Throughout the degree, candidates also have access to different labs and internships. Tuition fees amount to €72,200 (approx. US$84,726).

 

2) The Eli Broad College of Business

Taking the silver medal position is the Eli Broad College of Business, which earned high scores for career placements and research strength. A whooping 38.6 percent of graduates landed jobs in operations – the highest proportion on the list.

The two-year program offers different specializations, as well as a mix of required and elective courses for students to create their ideal degree plan. Tuition costs total US$33,142 for Michigan residents, US$52,505 for out-of-state residents; and US$52,652 for international students. 

1) MIT Sloan School of Management

Taking the top spot as the best MBA for an operations management specialization is the program at MIT Sloan School of Management, which achieved very high scores in all ranking indicators.

Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the 24-month program has tuition fees of US$192,115. MIT is home to four research centers associated with operations management: The Operations Research Center, the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, The MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and the MIT Sloan Initiative for Health Systems Innovation.

Sloan kicks off the top 10 for the finance specialization ranking – earning a near perfect score for employer research.

Sloan’s two-year MBA program offers ‘Introduction to the Practice of Finance’ in the first semester. Other required courses include Managerial Finance, Corporate Finance, and one Action Learning course. Pre-approved action learning courses include:

Located in Manhattan, a stone’s throw away from Wall Street, NYU Stern is close to the beating heart of US finance.

4) Columbia

Founded in 1911, CBS is one of the oldest business schools in the world. Its program scored very highly across all indicators.

Some finance-based electives at Columbia include applied value investing; the future of financial services; impact investment.

And if you want to add even more finance to your bow, some CBS clubs that will help include:

Some of the financial electives MBAs can take at HBS include corporate finance; entrepreneurial finance; finance and capitalism; private equity finance; real property; sustainable cities and resilient infrastructure; investment strategies, and more.

Students undertaking HBS’s MBA program in the academic year 2020-2021 will pay US$111,818 for the full program and additional expenses. However, a married MBA would pay US$132,176; a married student with one child would pay US$147,790, and so on.

2) Stanford Graduate School of Business

Stanford’s two-year MBA landed the top spot in our QS World University Rankings: Global MBA Rankings 2021 – with the finance track earning a perfect score for employer reputation and near perfect for the other indicators.

The topics in Finance I during the first year include criteria for making investment decisions, valuation of financial assets and liabilities, relationships between risk and return, and capital structure choice.

For the academic year 2020-21, the cost of attendance for a first-year MBA student is US$118,644 for a single student, and $142,080 for a married student. 

The Stanford MBA Class of 2022 has 436 students of which 47 percent are female, and 35 percent are international. Students have an average of 4.7 years’ work experience, and an average GMAT score of 733. 

1The Wharton School

Table-topper Wharton has long been considered a powerhouse in finance, and with its MBA finance specialization landing the number one spot again, it’s no surprise.

Wharton earned a perfect score for employer reputation, as well as near perfect scores for research strength and career outcomes.

MBA students choosing to major in finance are required to take the two core requirements (Corporate Finance and Macroeconomics and the Global Economic Environment) and four upper-level elective finance credit units.

Wharton’s Stevens Center for Innovation in Finance aims to stimulate cutting-edge teaching and research as well as student and industry engagement focused on the revolutionary impact of information technology on financial services.

MBA students Wharton will feel a pinch in their purse to attend the prestigious school, with students paying US$111,900 per academic year.

Kicking off the entrepreneurship specialization top 10 is Saïd Business School. The one-year MBA program scored a near perfect score for employer reputation.

The entrepreneurship integration module at Saïd looks at entrepreneurship as the ability to effectively deploy resources to devise business solutions to complex and multifaceted challenges. It focuses on two main areas of entrepreneurship: social entrepreneurship and technological entrepreneurship.

Saïd’s MBA class profile for 2020-21 features a class size of 315, 67 nationalities, 92 percent international students, 479 percent female students, an average of five years’ work experience, and a median GMAT of 680.

9) IE Business School

The Madrid-based full-time MBA program at IE scored a perfect score for the career placements indicator (the only program in the top 10). The 2019 graduating class boasted a cohort of 598, of which 22 percent of grads started their own business.

IE had 35 international venture days in the last three years, and students are able to shape, design, and develop their business ideas in the Venture Lab.

The program takes one year to complete, with intakes in September and January. Tuition fees for the 2020-21 academic year are €72,200 (approx. US$82,000).

8) Judge Business School

Judge’s entrepreneurship concentration gives students the skills and knowledge to help them start their own business and grow it successfully.

During the entrepreneurship concentration, students will learn about different types of entrepreneurship, including social enterprise, family businesses, blended models, life-style companies, consulting, bootstrapped businesses, and venture-funded businesses.

There were 206 students in the MBA graduating class of 2019. Fees for the 12-month Cambridge MBA program for the class of 2021/22 are £59,000, plus additional program charges. 

7) IESE Business School

IESE prides itself on its innovative ethos, inspiring the leaders and start-up entrepreneurs of tomorrow. The program – with 368 students – scored a close to perfect score for the employer reputation indicator.

IESE’s Entrepreneurship Department focuses on new venture creation, intrapreneurship and entrepreneurial management within existing organizations. Interestingly, a third of IESE alumni have participated in the creation of a company at some point during their career.

The entrepreneurship course – taught since 1974 – covers such topics as:

Located in London, England’s capital and global business hub, Imperial scored very highly for the Research Strength and Employer Reputation indicators.

Imperial students can utilize the Imperial Enterprise Lab, The Venture Catalyst Challenge, WE Innovate @ Imperial Program, Imperial Business Pitch, and Advanced Hackspace.

3) Harvard Business School

HBS has long been regarded for its stellar MBA program – with the entrepreneurship track earning a perfect score for the employer reputation indicator.

There are 450 students in entrepreneurship club at HBS, as well as 35 different professors teaching entrepreneurial management electives.

HBS’ Rock Centre for Entrepreneurship supports faculty research, fellowships for MBA and doctoral students. Students can undertake the annual New Venture Competition, and symposia and conferences, one-one-one meetings with the Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, and Rock Summer Fellows.

Harvard’s class of 2022 has 732 students – much smaller than the usual 930 students, as participants were given the option to defer because of the coronavirus pandemic. Within the cohort, 33 percent are international, 44 percent are female, with an average of 4.7 years’ work experience. Tuition fees for the 24-month program are US$111,818.

2) MIT Sloan

Sloan has soared up the top 10 for entrepreneurship ranking by nine places this year – earning a close to perfect score for research strength and employer reputation.

The Entrepreneurship & Innovation (E&I) Track focuses on learning how to launch and develop innovative and emerging technology companies and emphasizes the integration of academic and practitioner lessons, team practice, and real-world application in entrepreneurship.

Required subjects on the track include:

Students can also compete in the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition and the MIT Clean Energy Prize.

Sloan’s MBA Class of 2022 has 484 students, of which, 33 percent are international, 38 percent are female, 51 nationalities are represented, and students have an average of five years’ work experience. Students have a median GMAT score of 720. For the academic year 2020-2021, students would pay US$77,168 intuition.

1) Stanford Graduate School of Business

Landing the top spot in the MBA specialization rankings for entrepreneurship yet again is Stanford. Stanford scored very highly in all ranking indicators, with a perfect score in employer reputation. Of the graduating class of 2019, 15 percent of the 417 students started their own business.

There are many entrepreneurial-themed courses you could study at Stanford including Social Ventures Practicum; Creativity Rules: Inventing the Future; The Lean Launchpad: Getting Your Lean Startup off the Ground, and many more.
