The University of Antwerp is a research university where pioneering, innovative research is conducted at an international level. Research and education are closely linked. Educational innovation is a constant focus, and special care is also taken to welcome and guide each of the 20,000 students spread across our nine faculties. The University of Antwerp is not an island: we build bridges to secondary education, to industry and, by extension, to society as a whole. With over 5,000 members of staff, the University of Antwerp is one of the most important employers in Antwerp, Flanders’ largest city.

The University of Antwerp provides excellent academic education to students from all social groups and of all generations. Our university is an academic community of students, lecturers and researchers in which we help each other acquire new scientific insights and develop skills. In this way, we enhance our own learning and are able to contribute to the well-being of our society.

Our excellent academic education is closely connected with scientific research. Students acquire knowledge about research results during lectures, through course materials and/or digital media. They gain a better insight by discussing research findings with each other and by writing papers about them.

The education we provide emphasises the development of competences. In addition to knowledge and insight, these competences will also include particular skills and attitudes. Thanks to competence-oriented education, our academic graduates are able to function successfully in professional environments.

We start from the idea that all students want to learn and educate themselves. Our educational programmes are designed to support and activate this desire. They aim to provide students with maximum opportunity for building up international learning experiences. Internationalisation of education stimulates the development of competences in communication, collaboration, creativity and problem solving.
