Teaching methods at CDU incorporate lectures and tutorials, seminars, presentations, intensive workshops, fieldwork and laboratory pracs. Lectures, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions total 12 –17 hours a week. In addition to attending class, students are expected to do independent preparation and study.

Research is central to CDU’s purpose and closely tied to the needs of the Northern Territory and the immediate region. In 2012, CDU received the highest possible ranking (5) for its research in Clinical Science, conducted primarily through the Menzies School of Health Research, and was ranked at or above world average in:
- Environmental Sciences
- Biological Sciences
- Information and Computing Sciences
- Economics
- Medical and Health Sciences.
- Research activity is commonly undertaken through partnerships and alliances with other universities and researchers nationally and internationally.
