NYU Shanghai officially founded

NYU Shanghai, the result of a collaboration between East China Normal University and New York University, was officially founded this week, reports China Daily. The institution is the first independent university to be established jointly by China and the US.

Islamic Virtual University planned in UAE

The United Arab Emirates has granted land and funds for a new online Islamic university. The Islamic Virtual University, reports University World News, will be supervised by the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World and will offer degrees in science and technology.

London-based university offers scholarships for trainee curry chefs

The University of West London is offering four scholarships worth £3,750 (US$6,050) to four would-be chefs enrolling on its curry course. The scheme was launched by UK Communities Secretary Eric Pickles, reports the BBC.

University of Texas joins edX

The University of Texas system, reports The Harvard Crimson, has joined edX – a venture offering free online courses, founded jointly by MIT and Harvard. The system includes nine schools in total, quadrupling the size of edX.

Inkjet printing researchers win Cambridge photography prize

A photography competition held by the University of Cambridge’s department of engineering has been won by an image of inkjet printing on a glass slide, reports Cambridge News. The work of the winning scientists explores how inkjet printing techniques can be used in medical science.
