A Masters in General Management was Ognjen Miskin's, from Serbia, choice of study at Bocconi University in Milan in order to pursue a non-conventional international career. Since graduating, he has secured a position as a junior analyst at Deloitte Consulting's Barcelona office. It seems, therefore, like he got exactly what he wanted!
"The attraction of a Masters in General Management was the opportunity to study at a prestigious university with an international class. It will also enable me to progress quickly in my career, take on responsibilities from the beginning and to make money."
Stimulating and demanding role
Ognjen's qualification has given him deep theoretical and practical preparation in the field, international exposure and communication and also developed his skills in languages. He's currently using them in his role as an analyst for an Italian consulting company where he's dealing with strategy and operational issues.
"During the day I have meetings with teams and clients, am involved in data research and analysis, responsible for idea generation and late at night I'm often found crunching data for as long as I can."
Ognjen says it's a highly demanding job and he's often working under time pressure. "The job requires you to have discipline and a lot of autonomy and self initiative. There are group dynamics that have to be managed, especially to keep a positive relationship with sometimes antagonistic members from the client's team.
"It is a stimulating and positive environment made of brilliant and open-minded people. The whole process is aimed at providing the client with feasible and meaningful solutions for the problems addressed in a very short time. The desire to provide your client with impacting results is the main drive of a job that can sometimes be very physical."
Ready for anything
Consulting provides Ognjen with many career opportunities, both within his current company and outside of it. "I can reach higher positions in the hierarchical ladder, deal more directly with clients and manage work teams, or I can find employment as a manager in virtually any sector in the business environment, with significant experience reached in relatively short time."
When asked about his master's program, Ognjen said the preparation is far more complete than an undergraduate diploma, and is more challenging in terms of time and workload.
"It gives you the habit of working, which is useful and studying general management means the career is quicker than in more traditional industries; learning is quicker and more intensive, you face many different companies, people, clients, industries in a short time and it leaves many paths open for further career opportunities."
He adds, "I feel I could choose anything, in any sector, any industry, and any function."
