If you're anything like me, you're probably anxious about what to expect from your first weeks of study.

But with a little preparation, you'll be able to handle everything your professors throw at you. As a master’s student in electronics and communication engineering, I’ve picked up some helpful tips and tricks along the way. Here’s how you can prepare for your engineering degree:

Things to know before your first class

1. Do your research

The most important thing I do to prepare for class is research the material I’ll be learning that semester. Subject syllabuses should be provided before the semester starts, so I’ll read around the topics covered and borrow some of the suggested books from the library.

When you’re researching, it’s helpful to write down any questions you have before your first lecture. Or if there’s a topic you don’t feel confident in like unit conversions, look for some online study materials that can help. I always look to YouTube when I need to learn something new as there are tons of tutorials to choose from.

2. Get ready to concentrate

At university, you'll have a lot more freedom than you did in high school. This may be your first time living away from home, and it can feel like a big change.

Something that helped me to manage my own time was a study schedule. I’m an early bird not a night owl, so my schedule made sure I got a few hours of studying every morning, in a quiet place without distractions.

Once you know your syllabus, you can estimate the amount of studying you need to do per day and create a schedule to suit. Don’t forget to make space for rest and social time too.

3. Use the resources available to you

My university provides lots of resources for students like books, online reading and videos, and it's up to us to take advantage of them. You can also ask your professors for advice about tutoring or further resources to help you to succeed in your course.

Before the semester starts, make time to read the resources available to you because it's your responsibility to get the most out of your studies.

4. Engineering is practical – get involved

Take your learning outside of the classroom by doing practical projects at home. You can find tutorials for projects like building an alarm clock or a mini robot on YouTube, Skillshare or Udemy and it can really help you to put the theory into practice.

Now you’re feeling prepared and ready to take on the world, let’s look at some tips and tricks for surviving your first class.

Tips to survive your first engineering class

1. Take notes and ask questions

Taking notes during lectures is one of the most important things you can do as it’ll help you to study for exams. Make sure you have a notebook specifically for your lab classes too. The process of writing down what you see and think during an experiment will help to solidify the information in your mind.

My best advice is to always ask questions if something doesn't make sense to you. You might feel silly, but asking questions is a great way to confirm that you understand the subject and will also help you build a relationship with your professors, as they can see you are engaged and want to learn.

For taking notes, I use the Cornell note taking system which helps you divide your notes into key information, summary of the main point and supporting details. Other note-taking systems you might want to use are:

Mind mapping (great for visual learners)

Box and bullet method (the best for lab notes)

Outlining method (when you want to go in-depth with a topic)

2. Use flashcards for formulas and equations

In engineering, there are many formulas and equations that you need to master. Flashcards are my favourite way to memorise formulas quickly. You can create your own or find digital alternatives online, like Anki which also provides helpful learning techniques for memory retention.

Flashcards have helped me to memorise equations like Laplace Transform and differential equations that I would never be able to remember through simple studying.

3. When in doubt, Google it!

If you don't know something, make sure to ask your professor or classmates, but you can also head online and look for helpful resources via Google or any other search engine. There’s a great selection of free talks and lectures from prestigious universities like Stanford, Harvard, and MIT, and plenty of engineering blogs that explain difficult concepts when you’re stuck.

4. Set a goal for your class

The first year of university can feel overwhelming when there is so much to learn, but I found that setting a goal for class makes it feel easier.

For example, set a goal to get an A in a specific module or to complete all the homework on time. Having goals and believing you can accomplish them will motivate you to do well and make sure you are prepared for upcoming classes.

If you lay down the right foundations at the start of your studies, it will only get easier and more fun. You might need to put in a little extra work and effort at the beginning but soon enough, things will start to fall into place. And don’t forget to make time for friends!

Engineering is not an easy subject to study but if you keep up with your work, ask questions when you’re not sure and get involved in projects and clubs around your subject, you will survive. I did!

Good Luck.

Off

Admissions Advice

Off

Off

Admissions Advice
Related Categories:

admissions

student info

<Do not change this field.>

No

ELSEVIER logo

Off

IREG logo

Off

Methodology Page

Off

QS Stars logo

Off

Mon, 14 Feb 2022 03:41:23 +0000 Anonymous 2208632 at https://www.qschina.cn 为何美国MBA申请者选择在线学习 https://www.qschina.cn/admissions/why-us-mba-candidates-are-choosing-study-online
Why US MBA candidates are choosing to study online
craig@qs.com Fri, 02/04/2022 - Being able to gain a European qualification online also means that there’s no need to quit your job and invest in travel, living costs and accommodation alongside your tuition fees.

Pull factors: Why an online MBA?

Dr Berry recognises that the pandemic has been an influencing factor on changing attitudes towards online learning in general: “The pandemic has allowed us to work and interact differently so our expectations of what is possible remotely have changed. There has been a proliferation of online educational opportunities, some of high quality and some of more dubious quality.

“What remains unique about an MBA from a leading business school is the interactive learning aspect. What I’ve not seen from micro-credentials is a recreation of this learning environment, where you learn both from faculty and from each other. The depth and value of the MBA is the interactive classroom experience.”

Push factors: Why are domestic MBA applications in North America falling?

Over half of business school admissions officers in North America expect a fall in domestic MBA applications over the next 12 months. In our most recent survey of admissions officers working in graduate management education programmes, 52 percent of North American respondents forecast that domestic applications will be slightly lower (30 percent) or much lower (22 percent) in 2022.

The downturn is also reflected in the fall in GMAT tests taken domestically in the US. A total of 79,746 GMAT exams were taken by citizens of the USA in 2017, compared to 38,509 in 2021.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, founder and CEO of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said: “There has been a lot of discussion about the ‘great resignation’ in the US. It’s likely that what we’re seeing here is that the buoyancy in job vacancies is presenting sufficient opportunities for career mobility for aspiring managers, so there is less of an incentive to invest in an MBA to develop their skills and accelerate their career progression.

“What we’re likely to be seeing here is that potential MBA candidates in North America are currently thinking ‘job-first’ and not considering taking time out of their careers to study.

"In my experience, MBA demand is counter cyclical. With interest rates rising and market volatility, this situation could change quickly and MBA demand for full-time MBA studies in 2023 could see a significant uplift."

With domestic applications falling, US business schools can at least take comfort from the fact international applications are on the rise. 91 percent of North American admissions officers expect international applications to be the same or slightly higher.

It is possible that this represents a lag in applications which were delayed or deferred as a result of restrictions and health concerns during the pandemic, rather than a huge upsurge. However, it shows that an MBA from a leading business school remains a gold standard in global graduate management education.

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Off

Admissions Advice

Off

Off

52 percent of admissions officers in North America expect domestic MBA applications to fall

Online MBA programmes - Applicants submit their overall score (in the verbal and quantitative sections) and there is no minimum requested result.

Stage two: Academic background

Applicants will need to submit their grade point average (GPA) earned in their undergraduate degree.

Stage three: CV and personal statement

The third part of the application is the CV and personal statement. Programme directors will consider this qualitative section to evaluate the candidate’s suitability for the programmes.

Possible stage four: Video interview

A video interview may be required for some programmes. As the test requires a considerable investment in time and money to sign up and prepare for, you want to be prepared when you eventually take it.

While you will find several study options available, the best way to study for the GRE depends on you. To decide which method could be the best option for you, read up on the available techniques, and how you can integrate them into your prep time before the test.

Books

GRE preparation books are one way to get ready for the test. While these books are everywhere from libraries to online stores, they shouldn’t be the only method you use to prepare.

Advantages

GRE prep books are ideal when you have a tight budget. In some cases, you can find these books in your local library for free or online for under US$100. Because books are cheaper than other study options, they are an excellent tool to start studying.

Prep books allow you to learn more about the test and try practice problems for a low investment. While you get dozens to hundreds of practice problems – depending on the book publisher – this shouldn’t be the only way you study for the GRE as there are inherent disadvantages with self-study from books.

Disadvantages

The downside to only using books to prepare is the lack of feedback you get from study. While most books offer solutions to the practice problems, you may not understand the solution presented.

If you've ever seen GRE study books, you will notice their massive size. Unless you know what parts of the test you need to study the most, you can get lost in the hundreds of pages of information. Too often, students feel overwhelmed by the size of the books and give up on studying at all.

Yes, you should use prep books, but use them with another study method to achieve the best results.

Flashcards

If you weren’t already aware, the GRE tests your vocabulary. Participants must prove they have a college-level handle of English on the test, which makes flashcards appealing. But, like books, flashcards shouldn’t be your only study method.

Advantages

Flashcards make it easy to study for the vocabulary portion of the GRE anywhere. You can have flashcards on your phone and go through them on your commute, while waiting in the doctor's office or anytime you have a few free minutes. For an on-the-go study method, flashcards are an ideal solution.

Disadvantages

Yes, flashcards can help you drill in some vocabulary knowledge, which is critical for getting a high score on the GRE verbal section, but what about the math portion? On the flipside, flashcards don’t help you with critical reasoning or reading comprehension. If you want to use flashcards, make them a part of your studying method, not the only way.

Tutors

Private tutoring gives you one-on-one instruction for the GRE. Although you get private teaching, it may not be the most effective way to prepare for the GRE for everyone, especially if you want to save money.

Advantages

In an ideal situation, the tutor will customize teaching to the parts of the test you need to focus on. They should also give you GRE study tips to help you practice outside of tutoring sessions. With an online or in-person tutor guiding you, you may have more motivation to study than working on your own.

Disadvantages

The level of experience attained by tutors is wide and varied, meaning, you could find someone with no experience or specially trained test experts. Unless you have thoroughly vetted a private tutor or sought assistance from a GRE test prep company's trained tutors, you could find yourself getting poor advice and wasting your money.

The monetary aspect is a big disadvantage for some; private tutoring is one of the most expensive test prep options.

Online courses

Online courses give you an overview of the GRE as a comprehensive study option.

Advantages

The advantage of taking an online course is the flexibility to study anywhere you have access to a computer. These classes cost less than private tutoring, making them better choices for those on a budget. Online courses also give you a complete package of practice, information and study tips. Depending on the service, you can even find online study courses that offer a score guarantee, such as the Princeton Review.

Disadvantages

Unless you practice on your own outside of the online class, you may not get the full benefits from the course. Additionally, online learning doesn’t give you interaction with your fellow students or teacher that you get from in-person classes.

In-person courses

In-person courses require physical attendance in a class with other GRE students. Among the ways to study for the GRE, this is one of the most well-known, but is it the best?

Advantages

In-person courses are ideal if you need interaction with other students and the teacher. You can ask questions and collaborate on problems or form study groups with classmates. Since the classes happen on a pre-set schedule, you must keep up with studying and practice to avoid falling behind.

Disadvantages

In-person classes can feel tedious, especially with large amounts of information to learn. Additionally, depending on the class size, you may not get any personalized instruction during the course. Like tutoring, in-person classes can be expensive. However, some people find the investment a driving factor, to study harder and put more effort into participating in the class.

Don't wait to start your GRE preparation

Regardless of how you study for the GRE, you can’t wait until the last minute to begin preparation. Not only can it be extremely costly and time consuming, often you will have to take some time out before commencing your new course, and sometimes you won’t be able to get onto your course of choice at all.

However, if you’re really unhappy in your current course, switching courses can help you achieve more, and help you towards your career aspirations.

Read on to discover everything you need to know about changing university courses.

What to consider

Once you know that changing university course is the right thing for you, bear in mind that there are several practical aspects you need to consider before you commit to switching university courses.

Firstly, ask yourself why you want to change to this course. Be brutally honest about your reasoning – there’s no guarantee you will enjoy this new course better than the first one, and there is a lot of time and money at risk if you make the wrong decision. Alternatively, if you’re not 100 percent sure that university is right for you, jumping straight into a new course is probably the worst thing you can do.

If you’re changing course in order to get onto a more competitive course, we hate to be the ones to tell you, but this probably won’t work – universities are well aware of students attempting this, and will, more than likely, reject your application straight away.

Secondly, be aware that if you don’t meet the basic entry requirements for the course you want to change to, unfortunately, it’s unlikely the course will accept you.

Thirdly, there is no guarantee you’ll be able to transfer courses in the year you wanted – particularly if you submit your application after the deadline. This is especially true in competitive courses in high ranking universities, where spaces may be scarce.

If, after considering all of this, you are still set on changing courses, read on to find out how.

Changing courses in your current year

If you’ve just started your course, and realized immediately it just isn’t right for you, then you’re (slightly) in luck – you may be able to change without too many issues if you can get your application submitted before the deadline.

This deadline is usually around the second or third week of your first term. Beware though: once this deadline has passed, it’s a lot harder to change courses without incurring complications.

To change in your first year, in the first couple of weeks of term, follow these steps:

Decide what course you’re changing to and why

Consult your personal academic advisor

The first thing to do is to speak to your personal tutor or program leader to talk about your decision. They will provide you with information on how to proceed. Do this at your earliest opportunity

Talk to the student services office

Every university’s admin system works slightly differently, so you will need to find out how your university’s system works. To do this, seek the help of your student services office,. They will provide assistance on how to change your course, direct you to the correct departments and tell you who you need to talk to at uni

Fill in a form asking you which course you’d like to switch to and why

This will be available from your student support center or online. Consult your academic advisor or student support office if you’re unsure where to get the form

Your application will be considered by your current department and the department of the course you’re looking to change to

You will need to already have the required entry requirements for this course to get accepted

You will receive an email once your application has been approved

Changing next year

You will use this option if you’ve already completed your current academic year or have decided to stick it out until the end of the year before changing.

If you’ve missed the deadline for transferring during your first year, you may have to wait until the following September.

If this is the case, follow these steps to change courses next year:

Consult your academic advisor and student services

Fill in the form to say that you wish to change courses

In the UK, this should be before the UCAS closing date (15th January) and applications submitted on time will be treated like any other UCAS application. After the UCAS deadline, your application will be treated the same way as a late UCAS application.

Your academic advisor/personal tutor will be able to advise you on when this deadline will be

Your application will be considered, taking into account whether you’ve studied the required modules to progress into the next year of your new course

If so, you may be able to transfer straight into your second year. If not, you will have to repeat first year, and start the new course from scratch in September.

It’s also worth noting that you’re more likely to be able to switch to a different program within a department, as there will often be some common modules

Receive confirmation that your application has been approved

How will changing course affect tuition fees

The extent to which changing course will affect how much you pay in tuition really depends on what time of the year you decide to change courses. Generally, if you leave at any point during your third term, you will have to pay 100 percent of your fees for the year. If you leave earlier than that, you will only have to pay a percentage of your total annual tuition.

For further information on this, see the table below:

Tuition fees you will pay if you change courses or leave university

Time in academic year you leave your current course

How much of your annual tuition you will be required to pay

Before registering for your course

0 percent

Before the end of your first term

25 percent

Before the end of your second term

50 percent

Before the end of your third term

100 percent

When you transfer courses, you should be entitled to funding on the new course, but this depends on who provides your funding. Check with your funding provider about their procedure on changing courses.

If you get your funding via Student Finance England, for example, you should still be entitled to funding, including a maintenance loan and tuition fees. However, you must contact student finance to notify them of the change, and your institution also needs to notify them.

How will it affect international students?

As soon as you know you are changing course, contact the relevant department in charge of international studies to ask them how to proceed with your student visa. Bear in mind, the procedures vary across countries.

In the UK, you will need to inform the UK Home Office and there may be complications for your Tier 4 visa, and you may need to reapply. Talk to your university’s international studies office for more information on how to proceed.

In the US, you will need to make arrangements with your university’s international studies office, who will let you know how to approach the situation. If you don’t do this your institution will notify USCIS, and you may have complications with your visa.

Off

Careers advice

Applications

Off

Off

Find out everything you need to know about switching university courses.

Admissions Advice

Find your perfect university course with our program matching tool.

Related Categories:

admissions

choosing a degree

careers advice

student-info/admissions-advice

No

ELSEVIER logo

Off

IREG logo

Off

8 Things You Can Do to Make Your Personal Statement Stand Out
chloe@qs.com Thu, 10/10/2019 - 16:08
Thu, 10/10/2019 - 16:15

让你的个人陈述脱颖而出的8个技巧

Your personal statement is a great way to show your passion for your chosen subject and let the institution you’re applying to know you are the perfect match for their course. You can show off what’s great about you, and the skills and experience you have that you will bring to the course and the university.

However, it can be hard to know where to start, and how to frame your skills and experience so you don’t sound arrogant, but while also ensuring you stand out from other applicants!

We know this sounds like a lot for a maximum 4000 characters, but don’t worry! As well as the eight tips below to help make your personal statement stand out, you can also use QS Leap to make writing your personal statement a whole lot easier!

QS Leap application builder provides a 15-page personalized report which outlines your personal and transferrable skills, and provides you with content and recommendations that inform you how to present this information effectively to make your application shine and increase your chances of getting selected.

Without further ado, read on for eight things you can do to make your personal statement stand out!

1. Plan before you write

We know you’re eager to jump in and start writing, but as the old phrase goes; ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’. Before you start, briefly outline the points you want to make in your personal statement, and make sure you’re answering the questions; what, why and how. What do you want to study? Why do you want to study it? How do your skills and past experiences prove this?

A good way to do this is to come up with several key skills you have that you think will be relevant to studying your chosen subject and come up with examples of how you demonstrated these skills.

If you’re struggling to decide, try using QS Leap application builder. It will suggest key skills based on your personality type and suggest ways to embed these into your personal statement.

2. Format correctly

Careful formatting will make your personal statement appear neat and professional. To do this, separate it into paragraphs, making sure to include an introduction and conclusion. Each paragraph should discuss a different topic, so that, as a whole, your personal statement reads in a clear and fluid way.

For example:

Paragraph 1: Introduction

Paragraph 2: Academics

Paragraph 3: Why you’re interested and how you’ve demonstrated this

Paragraph 4: Hobbies and interests (including relevant work experience)

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

It’s important that each paragraph flows nicely into the next. QS Leap application builder will tailor personal advice as to what you should include in each paragraph of your personal statement to make each section sharp and unforgettable to admissions officers.

3. Make your introduction clear and direct

Grab the attention of your reader from the start, with a strong opening sentence highlighting your main skills, as well as outlining why you are applying to this course.

It’s imperative that you are specific and get to the point quickly. Don’t spend time thinking up a catchy gimmick for your first line, and definitely don’t use the cliché ‘this is what I’ve wanted to do since I was little’. These things won’t impress admissions officers and are often extremely overused. But if you’re really struggling on how to start off an admissions application, QS Leap application builder gives excellent advice on how to go about it.

Lots of people find it easier to write the other paragraphs first and write the introduction and conclusion at the end. One trick to make your personal statement flow better is to link the introduction to the conclusion.

4. Include examples (but make sure they’re relevant)

Of course, it’s great if you’ve done lots of extracurricular activities, but remember to relate them back to the course – if they aren’t relevant, don’t include them.

For every statement you make, follow it up with a ‘so what?’. Ok, so you were on your school debating team. So what? Admission tutors reactions to this are likely to echo the lyrics of Shania Twain’s “that don’t impress me much.”

Follow up this statement by talking about the skills you therefore developed, as well as what you learnt from this experience. Perhaps this taught you how to develop a structured argument, which will be useful in an essay-based subject where you will need to approach a question critically and argue your point.

It can be tempting to try and jam in everything you’ve ever done but being selective is much more effective. You can always talk about all these other things in an interview, or when you’re applying for a job in the future. They will come in handy, just not right now!

5. Put the ‘personal’ in ‘personal statement’

Making your application personal, ensuring it doesn’t sound insincere or generic, is the winning ticket for your personal statement. What makes you unique? Don’t be afraid to think a little outside of the box. Admissions tutors read hundreds of personal statements, so saying something a little different will see your application dazzle from the masses.

Avoid including quotes from other people – admissions tutors want to hear what you have to say, not what Bill Gates once said.

6. If you’ve done your research – brag about it!

This sounds obvious but when writing a personal statement, it’s important to show your passion for the subject. If you’ve read any related books, talk briefly about what you learnt from them, and why they have developed your interest in the subject. If you’ve taken the time to read up on the subject, it shows admissions tutors you’re eager to expand your knowledge.

Although you should demonstrate your knowledge of the course – and how you’ve already started relevant research and reading – there’s no need for you to talk about everything you’ve ever read that may be slightly relatable. As ever, selectiveness is key. 4000 characters really isn’t very much, and it’s important not to waste them by rambling (or by showing off).

7. Make your conclusion brief but informative

The conclusion is your final chance to make an impression on the admissions tutor. Use it to sum up and explore themes you have mentioned previously and apply them in a wider context. Decide what your main message is in your personal statement and reaffirm this in your conclusion.

As mentioned before, it’s quite nice to link your conclusion to your introduction paragraph. Refer back to something you said in your first paragraph and demonstrate how you’ve shown this throughout your personal statement.

Remember – the conclusion doesn’t need to be long – a sentence or two will be fine.

8. Proofread when you’re done

We can’t stress this enough. Check through your personal statement, then send it to a friend or family member to check through. Whether it’s an on-campus experience you’re after, or you’re thinking of pursuing an online degree so you can study at a time and pace that suits you, you’ll need to do your research.

IE Business School offers a wide range of degree programs that cater to the diverse needs and interests of current and aspiring business professionals around the world.

You may have heard about a dozen different business schools which offer outstanding master’s programs in finance or management, but if your passion is to study an MBA, you’d do well to pursue a course that you’re passionate about and is right for you.

This is where university rankings can help…

Do make the most of university rankings

Although university rankings can only offer a snapshot of what an institution and its degree programs have to offer, they’re still a very useful resource especially when it comes to whittling down your options between multiple business schools.

IE Business School, for example, has ranked first place in the QS Online MBA Rankings 2019, and is also one of the top 10 business schools in the world in the QS Global MBA Rankings 2019.

Do get in touch with the business school (or schools) you’re interested in

Once you’ve got a good idea of not just what you want to study, but where you want to study, getting in touch with business schools is a great way to find out more information.

Dig deep and find out whether they have any events, such as open days where you can visit the campus, and meet with professors and current students. Of course, if you’re looking to apply to an international institution, this may not be as easy. Many business schools offer a virtual campus tour, and even run their own international event fairs.

Do take the GMAT/GRE exams seriously

Although you need to be sure to check the specific entry requirements for each school you apply to, the GMAT/GRE exams are almost always necessary when it comes to applying to business school.

The GMAT is the most common entry exam for business school admissions and focuses more on your numerical and analytical skills, while the GRE is more versatile and assesses the way you think about business.

Don’t apply too early

Wait, what? It may sound counter-productive, and we’re not saying the opposite and for you to leave your application until the last minute. What we’re saying is, don’t rush anything. Give yourself enough time to do the best job possible and make sure it’s the best it can be.

Don’t be afraid to criticize your own application

You’re going to want to make sure your application shines brightest when the admissions team filter through the myriad of other stand-out applications, so you need to make sure every possible qualification, skill and experience you have is on it.

However, you’re going to need to be strict and consider what are the most critical elements of your application that need to be kept in, and what can be chucked out.

You’d benefit from having some fresh eyes look over your application, so ask a friend or family member to go over it and see how it comes across to them. Does your application sound genuine? Are you playing down your achievements? Don’t give the admissions team any reason to doubt your application.

Which brings us on to our next point…

Do make each application personal

Your application is essentially the digital version of you as a person. If you can get your personality and positive attitude across in words before the admissions team have even met you yet, then you’re doing well.

But be careful! If you’re applying to several business schools, make sure you demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of what each school stands for. Make sure your admissions essay is honest and reflects your interest in that particular business school and the degree program you’re applying to.

Do stick to the deadline

Mark your calendar as deadlines can come around a lot quicker than you may realize, and most business schools refuse to give extensions.

Do make sure to prepare all necessary documents

This includes an up-to-date CV, degree transcripts (which may need to be translated depending on where you studied your undergraduate degree), admissions essay (see above), up-to-date TOEFL exam results, as well as GRE or GMAT scores.

Business schools all have their own checklist when it comes to what is required when you apply, so double check with each school before you send anything off.

And finally… don’t panic!

If something goes wrong, or you weren’t successful the first time round, you may want to take a step back and think about what it is you could do to try and make your application even stronger next time. You haven’t missed your only shot at an MBA, so relax and start the process again.

This article was originally published on July 24th, 2019.

IE School of Architecture and Design

IE School of Human Sciences and Technology

IE Law School

IE School of Global and Public Affairs

Off

Applications

Business & Management

Off

Yes

Off

Applying to business school is no easy feat. This is done by assigning you one easy figure, following calculations using a universal scale.

UCAS points measure the relative value of all post-16 qualifications in the UK, including BTEC and A-Level.

Do all universities use the UCAS Tariff Point System?

Not all institutions use the Tariff Point System. Some universities are quite specific about applicants receiving particular grades in certain subjects. For example, many engineering applicants must have achieved an A* in either maths or physics to be accepted.

However, if you’ve applied to a university or college that does use the system, your application will be treated with much greater flexibility than if it was only being assessed on grades.

For example, rather than having to get BBB in your A-Levels, you can do better in one subject and worse in another, receiving grades of ABC, and still get the same number of UCAS points.

As a result, UCAS points allow for much greater diversity when universities are selecting students for enrolment.

Calculating your UCAS points

Each qualification, for example an A-Level or Scottish Higher, is allocated a size band value from one to four, based on the number of learning hours.

Each qualification is then also allocated a grade band point from three to 14. These two numbers are multiplied together to produce the number of UCAS points.

Here’s a table showing the value of A-Level and BTEC grades.

UCAS Tariff Point Calculator: BTEC & A-Levels

UCAS Tariff Points

BTEC

A-Level

56

Distinction*

A*

48

Distinction

A

40

B

32

Merit

C

24

D

16

Pass

E

If you want to work out your own UCAS points, there are many online calculators which are easy to use.

How many UCAS points do I need?

You can find out this information on university and college websites. It may also be of interest to look at the average UCAS points of successful applicants.

Whether you receive an offer that is grade based or determined by Tariff Points, it’s important you work as hard as you can to ensure the best grades possible in each of your qualifications. Even if you think you have enough Tariff Points, your university offer might also require a minimum grade in a particular subject so it’s essential you fully understand the conditions of your offer.

Off

UK & Ireland

UK - What to Expect

Off

Off

Trying to work out if you've scored enough UCAS points to be accepted into university? Where are you going to live? How are you going to pay for everything? Can you make sure you get your visa application approved in time? Are they even still accepting applications for this year?

The answer to that last question is yes. Many universities in the UK are offering a number of places through Clearing this year, including City, University of London. So, we spoke with them to find out more about the Clearing process, including how it works, what you need to do, and what one of its students thought about their own Clearing experience.

What is Clearing and what does it mean for me?

Clearing is part of the application process, and involves universities filling any remaining places they have on their courses for the upcoming academic year. You can apply through Clearing even if you’ve not applied to any university before, if you don’t hold any offers or if your exams results don’t meet the requirements set in your offer.

Ayse Enver, who got her place at City to study BSc (Hons) Computer Science through Clearing, considers it a great way to give people a “second chance” when it comes to applying to university: “Clearing provides spaces at universities that you may not have considered, or that did not end up as your final two choices.”

Know what you want to study and where you want to study

Take a step back and think about what it is you’d like to dedicate the next three (or four) years of your life to. What is your passion? What are your interests?

Consider what your academic strengths are too. Are you analytically minded? Or do you enjoy tapping into your imagination and thinking creatively? Knowing this can help you decide which undergraduate program is for you.

Of course, it’s important to know what you want to study, so take some time to figure out what subjects you are passionate about. You’ll then need to do some research to identify and narrow down potential courses available and what universities offer them and where.

We appreciate moving to a new country can be daunting, but it really doesn’t need to be. Do you enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, or do you like the hustle and bustle of the city?

These are the questions you should ask yourself before applying.

Where do I start?

Despite the common misconception that Clearing only opens once A-Level results in the UK have been released, it actually opens in early July.

In order to make the process as easy and successful as possible, you’ll need to research degree programs and universities. Once you’ve got a good idea of what and where you want to study, find the relevant contact information for the university, and find out as much information as you can on its website, which is the best source for all information.

You may think you’re in a race against time but consider your options carefully and don’t rush your decision making.

This short video below sees Dominic Davis, Head of Admissions at City talking through the Clearing Process.

What about funding?

Understandably, funding is one of the biggest concerns international students have when it comes to wanting to study abroad. Although tuition fees can be expensive, if you know where to look, it’s possible to secure some form of financial aid, including scholarships.

Websites such as TopUniversities.com have a number of articles dedicated to outlining the costs of studying in the UK for international students.

What about visas?

Once you’ve received your offer, you’ll then need to obtain a visa (this will depend on which country you’re from). Applying for a visa can be a lengthy process, so it’s vital you have all the necessary paperwork prepared in order to get your application underway as soon as possible.

Fortunately, many universities including City, have a dedicated Visa Advice Team that can assist and guide you over the visa application process.

What about accommodation?

Even if you’re sorting out accommodation at the last minute, you’ll be amazed at the various living arrangements available to you. From student halls, to private renting in a house or flat share, to being a lodger (where you stay with a live-in landlord), the options are endless and universities such as City have their very own housing support teams who are on hand to help with any accommodation queries you may have.

Finally, don’t panic!

Trying to make a decision while panicking can make the whole situation feel even more stressful than it needs to be, and you could end up making a rash decision you may regret later down the line.

“Do as much research as possible. Find out the various deadlines for applying, visas, accommodation and so on, so you can make sure you can meet them. You’ll also need to ensure you have the necessary documents needed for your visa as well as applying to the course,” says Rolf Jespersen, Joint-Head of International Recruitment at City.

Off

Applications

UK - What to Expect

Off

Yes

Off

It’s not too late to apply for a university place starting September 2019.

Admissions Advice

Find out more about Clearing at City, University of London

Related Categories:

Sponsored content

university applications

admissions

student-info/admissions-advice

Yes
Fri, 28 Jun 2019 13:40:43 +0000 stephanie@qs.com 916709 at https://www.qschina.cn
