If so, it’s important to know that the education landscape is evolving at a rapid rate, thanks to globalization, the growing number of international schools, and the increasing mobility of students and teachers all over the globe.

With the demand for international teachers on the rise, what does this mean for you? And how are universities preparing the next generation of teachers? We spoke with The Education University of Hong Kong to find out more.

What is ‘international education’?

The debate surrounding what ‘international education’ actually means is ongoing, with many believing it signifies a new strategic direction in comprehensive education where it broadens perspectives, builds diverse connections and encourages innovation and ideas across borders.

International schools traditionally cater to internationally mobile expatriate families who work in international businesses, foreign embassies and so on. However, local students may also attend the schools, not least in order to learn the language used as the medium of instruction at the school (usually English).

For those who are currently studying, or hoping to study an education degree, understanding the concept of international education is twofold. During your studies, you’ll automatically become part of a genuine and dynamic international community, where you’ll have invaluable access to a wide range of cultures, faiths, languages and perspectives.

Beyond your studies and into your career, you’ll want to consider the academic environment you’re teaching in – encouraging diversity and inclusivity among students where culture and language may have once been obstacles.

International education is a catalyst for leading change around the world

The world of international education is a melting pot of individuals and learning with a global perspective ensures students are exposed to different cultures, ethnic groups, religions and languages, enriching society in the process and broadening the academic experience for everyone.

It also, of course, establishes a multicultural learning environment which makes it the ideal setting for increasing students’ cultural awareness and fostering their understanding and appreciation of those who come from a different background to their own.

A growing global trend

Education is at the forefront of global development and, with globalization making it easier than ever for families to move abroad for work and study opportunities, it’s easy to see the appeal of pursuing an international education.

In January 2019, ISCResearch reported that there were 10,282 international schools, 5.36 million students and 503,000 staff members around the world, with those numbers only set to rise as the demand for access to international education heightens.

Asia is a rising star in international education, thanks to the rapid growth of English-medium internationals schools in the region with Hong Kong in particular, having long been regarded as a thriving international city ideally situated at the crossroads between east and west, north and south.

Demand for a ‘Western-style’ education, and the growing prominence of the International Baccalaureate and Cambridge Assessment system, mean the education landscape in Asia and elsewhere is undergoing a progressive transformation.

What this means for aspiring teachers

Echoing the demand for international schools, there is also a surge in demand for aspiring teachers who have the necessary training, cross-cultural skillset and global outlook to work in an international setting.

Such training is critical, and universities are creating new degree programs in response to this. For example, The Education University of Hong Kong, which ranked third in Asia in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 for Education, has purposely developed the Bachelor of Education Minor in Teaching and Learning in International Schools in order to meet the increasing needs of an evolving teaching landscape.

As a result, students have the opportunity to take advantage of Hong Kong’s unique international location to prepare themselves for careers as teachers in international schools anywhere.

Students are taught by professors and lecturers from all four corners of the globe, including Australia, England, mainland China, Russia, South Africa and Hong Kong, ensuring a truly international experience. With them they bring their own wealth of knowledge, skills, subject-specific expertise and understanding of different education systems from around the world.

The program aims to develop students into teachers who have the confidence to teach in an international setting. Students are prepared in areas that include teaching, learning, curriculum and assessment in international schools, take courses such as International Schools in Global Context, and undertake their teaching practicum in one of the many international schools in Hong Kong.

BEd students who complete the Minor in Teaching and Learning in International Schools alongside their major program of study will be able to teach in international schools in Hong Kong and those around the world.

In addition, study tours such as those offered through the Global Learning Enhancement Fund by the Department of International Education at The Education University of Hong Kong allow students to develop their international comparative perspectives and see the relevance to their studies as they travel to countries such as South Africa, Russia, Nepal, Cambodia, Germany and Taiwan.

International study opportunities such as this have always been a popular method for increasing awareness and appreciation cross-culturally and cross-borders.

Off

Studying abroad

Choosing a university

Education and Training

Undergraduate

Off

Yes

Off

The world of education is changing and is set to become more diverse and mobile than ever before. From glittering skyscrapers sprouting from Ho Chi Minh city streets to top-rated restaurants packed by growing ranks of middle-class citizens, rapid economic development has propelled Vietnam to become one of the fastest-growing Southeast Asian countries.

While the story of how Vietnam picked itself up is inspiring, the work’s not done yet. To sustain this growth, the country needs to revamp its education system to train the next generations of innovators and workers. To this end, the Vietnamese government has been working with the World Bank and The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) to build capacity for its leading normal universities with a mission of nurturing educators who focus on skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.

The new nationwide programme will see 600,000 school teachers and headteachers in Vietnam benefit from an enhanced teaching development system so they can adapt to new approaches to curriculum and instruction under the current education reform.

Since the start of the landmark 10-month Enhancing Teacher Education Programme, EdUHK’s team of experts - which includes academics in the fields of curriculum reform, educational leadership, quality assurance, teacher development, vocational education and teaching innovation - has flown to Vietnam multiple times.

Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) at EdUHK, said: “After several rounds of visits, the improvement was significant and the Ministry of Education and Training appreciated the efforts made by EdUHK. Throughout the process, we have engaged the senior management of the leading normal universities to devise their capacity-building and strategic plans and help them achieve their goals in line with international trends and practices in higher education.”

EdUHK is the largest provider of qualified teachers in Hong Kong and is home to influential educational experts.

It’s a publicly funded education-focused university, offering diverse undergraduate, taught and research postgraduate programmes up to doctoral degrees. Notably, the university has adopted an interdisciplinary method of academic development under its “Education-plus” approach, which has led to newly emerging interdisciplinary areas in psychology, the social sciences, and cultural and creative arts.

With its established standing in the Asia-Pacific region, EdUHK and its predecessor have provided thought leadership in education-related projects in collaboration with government agencies and international NGOs, including the World Bank, UNESCO, the Asia Development Bank and the European Union.

EdUHK is ranked ninth in the world and second in Asia for education, according to the QS 2018 World University Rankings by Subject.

Off

Hong Kong SAR

Off

Yes

Off

Interested in working in education? And where better than Hong Kong, as a location which combines expertise in the field of education studies with one of the world’s most dynamic and eclectic study environments?

To find out more about the hows and whys of pursuing a Masters of Education in Hong Kong, we spoke to Professor Allan Walker, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Human Development at The Education University of Hong Kong – currently ranked 12th in the world and 2nd in Asia in the field of education. Here are five of the most compelling reasons to follow this route…

1. Boost your career in education

If you want to take your career in education to the next stage, a Masters of Education is an obvious next step – and could lead to some of the most inspiring and potential-packed careers around. “Although demand ebbs and flows for careers in education, good teachers and school leaders will always be in high demand,” Walker says. “Working in education provides students with the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the lives of young people and to society in general – an opportunity not offered in many other professions.”

He adds, “Graduates go onto a number of roles in schools. These include principals, vice principals, curriculum leaders, special education coordinators and/or teachers. The courses prepare educational professionals for whichever career pathway they decide to pursue.”

2. Access education jobs in Hong Kong – and beyond

For over a quarter of a century, the Hong Kong economyhas enjoyed consistent growth.

With a growing economy, professionals from across the globe are seeking jobs in Hong Kong – and one of the best ways to prepare for a career in the city is by attending a local university. A Masters of Education can be a natural step toward pursuing an education-related job in Hong Kong.

Studying in Hong Kong “prepares you to teach in a range of schools,” Walker says, and could well maximize your chances of finding a relevantjob in Hong Kong following graduation. In addition, studying in Hong Kong is a great starting point from which to access jobs in many other countries – in both the East and the West.

As Walker explains, at The Education University of Hong Kong, “The range of specializations offered makes focused study with a solid general foundation most valuable. In many ways, Hong Kong remains the gateway to China and place where ideas flow from the East to the West, and vice versa.”

3. Join an international community of education professionals

Hong Kong itself is well-known for its international character, and the same is true of its higher education system. At The Education University of Hong Kong, the number of students coming from outside of Hong Kong and mainland China is continually growing, with international graduates going on to work in both local schools and back in their native countries.

“One of our aims is to attract students from both the region and internationally,” Walker says. “In past years, many students have preferred to do their Masters with universities in the West, and we want to reverse this flow. With the increased global interest in Asian education systems – particularly in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Shanghai – due to outstanding performance on international comparative exams such as PISA, we believe our program has much to offer.”

As a teacher himself, Walker also understands that the foundation for any successful program lies with its faculty, and he highlights the benefits of having staff members from across the world. “Our advantage comes from our international staff profile,” he says. “We have staff from South Korea, Taiwan, China, Russia, Canada, Singapore, Australia, the US and the UK – each bringing their own strengths and working synergistically to build the strength of the program.” He adds that the university’s “exciting and relevant courses” are developed in collaboration with a selection of “bright young teachers”, many of whom have themselves studied internationally.

4. Benefit from years of expertise in the education field

The only university dedicated to teacher education, The Education University of Hong Kong traces its founding to 1853. Offering some 330 academic experts to support research and scholarly activities in education, the Institute “is interesting, inspiring and stimulating”, says recent Masters of Education graduate Ewana Chau. She explains that the program “combines theories and practices which could be applied in my daily work.”

Chau is currently a kindergarten principal. Her fast career progression is not unusual, Walker believes, because “Our program emphasizes the application of theoretical knowledge to the fundamental issues and problems of practice. As such, graduating students not only have solid theoretical knowledge but also understand how this can be applied for positive change in classroom and schools.”

The Education University of Hong Kong offers a wide variety of specializations and courses, including an MEd program which helps prepare students for future career paths in a specific field. Areas of focus include Business Education and Human Resources Development; Early Childhood Education; and Mathematics, Technology, Science and Environment. Walker sums up the university’s key strengths: “a great range of specializations and courses; committed, highly qualified academics as teachers; deep knowledge of education in Hong Kong and across East and Southeast Asia; and a growing presence in online and blended learning.”

5. Enjoy immersion in Hong Kong’s unique culture

When students aren’t studying, it’s nice to be situated somewhere with a diverse range of diversions!Hong Kong cultureis so varied that in 2007 the city began working on a list of items of “intangible cultural heritage”. Seven years later, according to an article in the South China Morning Post, the list had grown to some 480 items including: “Cantonese opera, egg tarts, pineapple buns, umbrella making, Hakka folk songs, the making of snake wine and kung fu.”

While it may be difficult to experience all 480 items alongside your Masters of Education, students should certainly make time to explore the local vicinity, perhaps starting with a cruise along Victoria Harbor and the waters between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. Touring nearby Lantau Island offers a chance to visit the Giant Buddha Exhibition Hall, while strolling on the city’s Avenue of the Stars lets visitors enjoy everything from commemorative plaques, celebrity handprints, descriptive milestones, movie memorabilia, and a life-size statue of kung fu action hero Bruce Lee.

For those hoping to get a different perspective of Victoria Harbor, the 60-meter Observation Wheel offers 42 gondolas, each with seating for eight. The gondolas are even equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, in case you want to surf the web while suspended high above the island. Just a short taste of the wide range of entertainments and experiences that you really only will find here in Hong Kong!

About Professor Allan Walker

Before he taught students how to teach, Professor Allan Walker was himself a teacher. In his home country of Australia, he began his professional career as a teacher before becoming a principal. After completing his doctorate at the University of Illinois in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, he shifted to academia.
