How studying in Scotland helped me start my own business

Located in the northern third of the UK, Scotland is a thriving business hub. Scotland’s cities offer excellent transport links and great infrastructure but come with a lower cost of living than some other European cities. This makes them very attractive to international businesses looking to expand overseas, and many international companies choose to have offices in Scotland.

Scotland is also home to 19 universities, including the University of Strathclyde: a leading technological and research-focused university located in the heart of Glasgow.

TopUniversities spoke to University of Strathclyde alumna Zelda Li, who moved to Scotland to study an MSc in Applied Economics after earning an undergraduate degree in mainland China. Since gaining her master’s, Zelda has returned to China to start her online career coaching business.

Zelda told TopUniversities how studying in Scotland helped her start her business.

Why did you decide to study economics at the University of Strathclyde?

I chose to study a master’s in economics at the University of Strathclyde because it has one of the most prestigious business schools and applied economics degrees in the UK. The school has an excellent reputation and is spoken of very highly in mainland China.

The University of Strathclyde define itself as the place of useful learning, which I liked as it showed me the degree would be practical.

Another reason for choosing the University of Strathclyde was that I love Scotland. The people are very friendly, nice and speak straight to the point. I’m from northern China and have a similar personality to this, so I really resonated with the Scottish personality. I felt very welcome. I also loved the historical buildings, the opportunities to go hiking and the castles.

Could you tell me a bit about your career so far?

Before starting my master’s at Strathclyde, I had 10 years of experience working in China. I worked as a recruiter for about five years, and my last job was covering Beijing and San Francisco office recruiting.

While I was in the UK, I interviewed with companies in the UK, such as JP Morgan, Uber and Amazon. I got an offer from JP Morgan in Glasgow. However, I declined the job offer as I wanted to go back to China to start my own business. I have a social media channel in China that has 13,000 followers, so I wanted to work on my social media channel start-up.

However, initially the start-up didn’t generate too much profit. Someone in London reached out to me and asked me if I would work for them for four hours a day as a part time independent contractor. So now in the mornings I focus on my social media start-up and in the afternoons I work as a part-time headhunter for a London-based firm.

After graduating you decided to start your own business. Please could you explain what your business does?

Initially I wanted to start a career coaching channel because I used to be a recruiter so I could share my expertise. I shared my experience of interviewing with JP Morgan and Bloomberg on my channel. My followers loved that so I thought, ‘why not start my own career channel?’.

I am still adjusting the direction of my business, but it will be about building a career, job hunting and interviewing in the Western world.

Why did you decide to start your business?

When I was in the final stage of my master’s, writing my dissertation, I got really stressed and I used my social media channel to connect to other students who were doing their dissertation while job hunting. Lots of people resonated with it and that’s why my channel started to attract more followers.

My target audience was primarily Mandarin-speaking. I thought if I then went back to China after graduating, I would be able to develop much more relevant content for my target audience.

Looking forward, if everything goes well, I might move back to London to work. The company I’m working with part-time has offered me a potential position if I do decide to move back.

How do you think studying at Strathclyde prepared you for entrepreneurship? What skills did you learn in your degree that helped you build and run your business?

Doing an applied economics degree at the University of Strathclyde definitely helped me to think more systematically.

If you want to start your own business, you cannot rely solely on passion. You have to systematically prepare for it. You need to do your research and understand what your target audience wants. Analyse the situations and understand the potential challenges you may encounter, as well as any costs.

Since studying my master’s at Strathclyde, I feel like I’m doing things in a much more productive and efficient way and I have the ability to tackle much more complex and sophisticated problems. I am also much more confident than I was before. I know that there are going to be problems, but I also know that I can come up with solutions.

How did the University of Strathclyde support you in your career?

The University of Strathclyde really supported me when I was searching for jobs in the UK. The University of Strathclyde’s career services helped me with the interview process, with adjusting my CV and understanding how to effectively job hunt.

I also had a conversation with the careers services to find out and understand the many differences between interviews in the UK and in the US.

Are there any non-academic things that you experienced while studying in Scotland that have helped you in your career so far?

This is the first time that I have worked so closely with people from different countries and different cultures.

In the past I’ve found that when you’re working with somebody, you don’t usually work directly with them on a project. For example, as a recruiter I often have calls or face-to-face meetings, but these only last for around 30 to 45 minutes. However, in my master’s study, I got the chance to closely work with lots of different students on projects and presentations. I think working this closely with people enriches the way you communicate and understand others.

This has helped me in my career, as it helped me to better understand how people communicate and how they handle things.

Overall, would you recommend studying abroad in Scotland?

Of course! I loved studying in Glasgow. Scotland is really beautiful and a great place to be a student and the people are all so friendly.

When I wasn’t studying, I would go hiking in the natural parks, see movies, travel around Scotland’s cities. There are also festivals, such as the Edinburgh festival, which has music, markets and lots of handcrafts. I would definitely recommend studying in Scotland.

The online MBA program at Spain’s IE Business School has been ranked the best in the world in the QS Online MBA Ranking 2020.

Released today, the QS Online MBA Rankings assess the online MBA offerings of 47 business schools worldwide.

10) University of Otago Business School

Otago’s Online MBA has jumped up three places this year to kick of the top 10. The program has the second highest score for class experience in the top 10.

Live classes are held in the evenings twice a week, and you would be expected to attend all classes. Classes are also recorded for revision purposes.

The three-year course is made up of two phases:

Phase 1: students take 12 core papers over about 2.5 years
Phase 2: Students undertake a business project or international exchange or a combination of these up to 60 points.

Tuition for the 2020 program is (per 15-point paper) NZ$2,230 for NZ citizens or NZ$3,623 for international students. The cohort is made up of 40 percent female students, and participants have an average of 16 years work experience – the highest in the top 10.

9) Chapman Graduate School of Business – FIU

The Professional MBA (PMBA) Online is a new entry in this year’s top 10. The program scored the third-highest for class profile in the top 10.

Students must complete the twelve (12) core courses and two (2) specialization courses (total of 14 courses/42 credit hours) from the likes of Real Estate or Real Estate, along with three Professional Development Seminars.

There are five starts per year: August, October, January, March and May/June, and GMAT/GRE waivers for individuals with more than 4 years of professional experience.

The program costs US$42,000, and the cohort has surpassed gender parity with 53 percent female students – by far the highest percentage in the top 10 – with an average of 8 years’ work experience.

8) Marshall School of Business

The 21-month online MBA program at Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California achieved a high score for class experience.

Aside from one six-day residential intensive course, the rest of the program is delivered fully online through virtual team meetings and assessments, case studies, interactive games and moderated discussion boards. There are also live online class meetings two to three times per week.

Tuition is US$102,975, with total tuition costs coming to around US$108,975. In terms of class profile, the cohort is 32 percent female with an average 11 years’ work experience.

7) Alliance Manchester Business School

Alliance Manchester Business School achieved a high score for the class profile indicator.

The Manchester Global Part-time MBA degree combines core courses, electives and applied learning (including simulation projects and live business projects). The flexible program includes 30 days of teaching spread across six workshop residentials (including Dubai, Hong Kong, Manchester, São Paulo, Shanghai and Singapore).

The 24-month program (with start dates in July and January) has tuition fees of £30,000 (approx. US$37,293) or £27,500 for the accelerated Finance pathway (approx. US$34,177). The cohort is diverse, with 84 percent international students, 37 percent female students, and 12 years’ average work experience.

6) Indiana University (Kelley Direct Programs)

Offered by Kelley Direct Programs, Indiana University’s online MBA program – established in 1999 – was the first online MBA offering from a top school. The program achieved a perfect score for class experience and a high score for employability.

The program can be tailored to your professional goals, as 50 percent of the modules are electives plus you can choose from seven major specializations including Business Analytics, Marketing and Finance (amongst others), and a signature integrated core experience, teaching you the business fundamentals. There are weekly live classes and international immersive electives available.

Meet your classmates and professors at the Kelley Connect Weeks, two required one-week residencies in Bloomington, Indiana. The cohort has an average of 8.5 years’ work experience and 26 percent female students. The 24-month program has tuition fees of US$67,830.

5) MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business

MIP’s iFlex/iFlex EMBA online MBA offering lasts 24 months. The program earned the second-highest score for class experience in the top 10.

The program is made up primarily of digital learning, with two compulsory face-to-face weeks, additional optional face-to-face weeks and international study options. There are weekly two-and-a-half hour live sessions, plus asynchronous learning methods.

Fees for the program are €32,000 for individuals (approx. US$38,960) and €37,000 for those sponsored by their company (approx. US$41,579). The cohort is 40 percent international (jumping up from 28 percent last year), with an average of 13 years’ work experience.

4) AGSM

The only Australian entry in the top 10 moves up two places this year. Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) at the University of New South Wales Business School’s MBAX scored highly for employability and class experience.

AGSM’s program features a compulsory starter course, followed by five core courses, five specialization courses, and a capstone course within the area of study you choose – Change, Social Impact, Technology or Finance. Similarly, you can undertake the international exchange opportunities at business schools including London Business School, Yale School of Management and the NUS Business School.

The total estimated fees for the program (change/technology/finance track) are AUD$59,760 (approx. US$36,465), and AUD$56,340 (approx. US$34,381) for the social impact track. The cohort has an average of 13 years’ work experience and 37 percent female students.

We have also introduced a number of new electives across some of the other specialisations including digital innovation."

3) Warwick Business School

WBS managed to move up one place into the top three spot this year. The program achieved the second-highest score in the rankings for class profile.

Warwick’s program takes an average of 30 months to complete. In your first year, you’ll undertake eight required modules and two ‘Warwick Weeks’ on campus. In your second year you’ll have four elective modules and a consultancy project. Per module, there are 30 teaching hours, 40 hours of guided self-study and 30 hours of independent study.

The cohort is diverse, with 79 percent international students (down from 92 percent) and 28 percent female students. Fees for the program are £33,250 (approx. US$41,210) and include one international elective module.

2) Imperial College Business School

Landing the second spot once again is Imperial College Business School’s program, which scored highly for employability and faculty and teaching, where it got the second-highest score in the rankings for both indicators.

Most of your teaching will be through The Hub, a virtual learning platform developed by Imperial’s award-winning Edtech lab. Students complete pre-study modules, then attend a five-day, compulsory on-campus induction week, as well as four core module periods followed by an optional global experience week. The course is topped off with a capstone business game.

Fees for the 24-month program are £37,500 (approx. US$46,626). In terms of class profile, 80 percent of the cohort are international, 30 percent are women, and they have an average of 10.5 years’ work experience.

Online learning has taken away the physical barriers of geographic location which means that students from all over the world can study together, gaining the important skills, knowledge and networks needed to succeed in the world of international business."

1) IE Business School

In first place and retaining the top spot for yet another year is IE Business School. The program achieved the highest score in the rankings for both employability (a perfect score) and faculty and teaching.

It is made up of three core online periods, one Global Immersion Week (locations include Shanghai, Los Angeles and Mumbai), plus three face-to-face weeks in Madrid. Teaching includes working in interactive small groups on real-world, industry-based case studies. The program has an average length of 18 months, the shortest in the rankings.

The class profile is made up of 86 percent (down from 94 percent) international students, 34 percent women, and an average of 10 years’ work experience (up from 8.5 years). Fees for the 2019-20 academic year are €51,200 (approx. US$57,778).

Martin Boehm, Dean of IE Business School, said: “IE’s Talent & Careers Department understand how important the career path is for all our students and graduates. The department is made up of a growing team, from all over the world, who work closely with more than 3,500 international recruiters.”

But it wasn’t just the employability indicator that proved successful to the business school, IE also scored very highly for the faculty and teaching and class experience indicators.

Boehm said: “The faculty teaching on IE’s Online MBA program have a distinctly international profile – one which mirrors that of our student body – and they are dedicated to excellence in their research as well as their teaching and professional activities, and they bring this passion and knowledge into the online classroom.

“Furthermore, the faculty are trained in the special art of teaching online and are focused on building connections and fostering participation between students.”

Boehm also noted that the small class size on the Online MBA program is another advantage to the course and business school itself. He said: “None of our classes cater to more than 35 students which allows students to build very tight relationships with their peers and to benefit from an intense interaction with our faculty. I really feel this high touch approach has been our secret of success.”

10) Bradford University School of Management

Bradford University School of Management’s Distance Learning MBA two-year program could be seen as a moderately sized online MBA program in the grand scheme of things.

Students will study at their own convenience through the business school’s Virtual Learning Environment, with live online tutor sessions to contextualize learning.

Assessment include: a 4,000-word core assignment, 2,000-word elective assignment, and 15,000-word Management Project.

Students on the program have an average of 13 years’ work experience, 76 percent of students are international, and 31 percent are female. Tuition is the same for all students at £18,296 (US$22,784), but some international students may need to pay extra fees.

9) AGSM @ UNSW Business School

Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) at the University of New South Wales Business School’s MBAX scored highly for employability and class experience.

AGSM’s program features a compulsory starter course, five core courses, five specialization courses, and a capstone course in: Change, Social Impact, Technology or Finance. Similarly, you could take international exchange opportunities at business schools including London Business School, Yale School of Management and the NUS Business School.

8) Colorado State University College of Business

CSU’s College of Business Online MBA is a 21-month, 42-credit program teaching major functional business areas, including accounting, finance, information systems, leadership and human resources, supply chain, strategy, and marketing. The program scored very highly for the Class Experience indicator.

You also can spend seven to 10 days on the optional international business study trip as an elective – meeting with business leaders, learning international business culture, and becoming acclimated to different environments.

Tuition for the program ranges from US$42,580 (full-time) or US$43,294 (part-time). Students on the program have an average of 10 years’ work experience, 42 percent are female, and the average length of program is 21 months.

7) Jack Welch Management Institute

The JWMI online MBA was founded by former GE CEO Jack Welch in 2009. The program scored close to a perfect score for the Class Profile indicator. Students will learn business lessons from Welch, as well as from CEOs of companies like Berkshire Hathaway and Starbucks.

Students can complete the program from 18-36 months, there are 12 classes (10 weeks per course), and you’ll only spend 10-15 hours per week per class. The JWMI emphasizes that you can ‘Learn it on Monday, apply it on Tuesday’.

Tuition fees are US$46,200 for the whole course, with funding assistance also available. Students in the cohort have an average of 15 years’ work experience – the second highest number in the global ranking – 14 percent of students are female, and 46 percent are female.

6) Warwick Business School

The online MBA at WBS – ranked third globally – achieved the second-highest score in the global ranking for the Class Profile indicator.

5) Indiana University, Kelley School of Business

The program can be tailored to your professional goals, as 50 percent of the modules are electives plus you can choose from seven major specializations including Business Analytics, Marketing and Finance (amongst others), and a signature integrated core experience. There are weekly live classes and international immersive electives available.

4) Martin J. Whitman School of Management

With 485 students in its cohort, Whitman’s online MBA@Syracuse program just missed out on the top 3 largest MBA cohorts. The program scored very highly for the Class Experience indicator.

Syracuse’s online MBA curriculum requires 54 credits (36 credits of core, 15 credits of electives, 3 credits of US and/or global residencies) to complete in as few as 24 months. Past residencies have been hosted in business hubs such as New York City, Denver, Hong Kong, and Munich.

A range of electives are available in areas that include project management, entrepreneurship, marketing research, and Lean Six Sigma.

Students in the cohort have an average of 11.3 years’ work experience, 40 percent female students, and participants complete the program in an average of 30 months. The estimated tuition is US$87,480.

3) Alliance Manchester Business School

AMBS’s Global MBA achieved a high score for the class profile indicator – and with 717 students it’s unsurprising.

2) Open University Business School

With distance learning at its ethos, it’s no wonder the Open University is one of the world’s most respected distance learning institutions, so it’s not surprising that their triple accredited flexible MBA attracts a lot of students – 1251 to be precise. The program scored very highly for the Class Profile and Class Experience indicators.

The program combines online forums and web discussion rooms with the all-important face to face component, with short residential schools and optional face to face workshops for most modules. Students can complete the MBA program in anything from 18 months to seven years.

Tuition ranges from £16,790–£18,420 (approx. US$20,862 to $22,886) depending on the route taken and if you’re from the UK, Republic of Ireland, EU, or international. Women make up 37 percent of the cohort, and international students make up 26 percent.

1) Amity Directorate of Distance & Online Education

And we’ve reached our online program with the largest cohort in QS’ Global Full-Time online MBA Ranking 2020 - Amity Directorate of Distance & Online Education’s online MBA with 4,392 students. The program scored very highly for the Class Experience indicator.

The two-year Online MBA Program was introduced by Amity Online in 2005.

Amity’s Learning Management System (LMS) features learning materials and interactive content, live online classes, webinars, and video lectures on demand. The program offers 15 industry-oriented specializations which can be elected from the 3rd semester onwards.

Students complete the program in an average of 24 months (with start dates in January and July). Participants on the program have an average of five years’ work experience, 26 percent international students, and 43 percent female students. The total tuition US$3,200.

With a small cohort of 33 students who have an average of 8.9 years’ work experience, the program has an accelerated structure that allows them to gain their degree at the same speed as the on-campus cohort.

In joint sixth place for the cohorts with the most female students – and a new entry in the online MBA rankings in 45^th place – is the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

The 120 students of the online MBA program, of which seven percent are international students, have an average of 6.6 years of professional experience.

Tuition is US$16,617.24.

The second of three online MBA programs with 50 percent of women in their 2020 cohort is La Trobe University Business School. The average program length is 24 months, but students can choose to complete it in as little as one year.

La Trobe’s online MBA focuses on innovative enterprise learning via Zoom, with unique courses such as the UN-backed ‘Principles for Responsible Management Education’ (PRME) aimed at training the future leaders of the business world.

Students have an average of 10.1 years’ work experience.

Tuition is AUS$39,936.48.

=6) Fox School of Business and Management

The final school coming in joint sixth place is Fox School of Business and Management.

Students on Fox’s medium-size program have an average of 11.7 years of work experience, one of the highest in this year’s ranking. The program received a high score for class profile.

The majority of faculty at Fox’s online MBA also teach on-campus MBA courses, guaranteeing students receive the exact same education experience – regardless of being online or in-person – ensuring the online MBA is consistent with the school’s values and learning objectives. Classes are taught on the learning management system Canvas and students can interact with each other and faculty members through Zoom.

Tuition is US$59,760.

5) SBS Swiss Business School

Halfway through the list, showing a significant improvement from last year’s ranking, is Switzerland’s SBS Swiss Business School, with the first school in the top 10 passing gender parity with52 percent of its cohort identifying as female.

SBS’ online MBA is ranked in 27^th place in this year’s overall ranking, with students having an average of nine years of work experience. The 2020 student cohort is one of the most international on the list at 79 percent.

The program is case study oriented and features live webinars on its platforms.

Tuition at SBS is one of the cheapest on the list at US$17,819.25.

4) Chapman Graduate School of Business – Florida International University

Florida International University received high scores across all indicators. The program’s student cohort has an average of eight years’ work experience, one of the highest on the list, and 53 percent of attendees identifying as women.

The 24-month online MBA program offers eight specializations including International Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, Marketing Channel Strategy, Strategic Negotiations, Business Date Analytics, Real Estate and Leadership.

Tuition is US$42,000.

3) Frank G. Zarb School of Business

With a two-rank improvement from last year, 2020’s third online MBA with the highest number of female students is Hofstra University’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

The 20-month program is a 45-credit MBA which features a curriculum divided into three focus areas: core competencies, advanced core, and major concentration. Students also have the option to take the non-cohort option and graduate within five years.

Students have an average of 12 years’ work experience.

Tuition is US$64,350.

2) EU Business School

In the silver medal position in this year’s ranking for the number of female students with a cohort is EU Business School - with 56 percent female students.

The online MBA program boasts 100 percent international students and has received a perfect score in class experience. The student cohort’s average years of work experience is high at 9.5.

Upon graduation, EU Business School students receive a state-accredited MBA from the University of Roehampton in London, as well as their EU degree.

The program – which can be completed in 12 or 15 months – is a mix of interactive webinars, business simulations and on-campus networking opportunities, giving students the opportunity to personalize their e-learning experience.

Tuition is EUR17,400, equivalent to US$19,515.84.

1) Suffolk University – Sawyer Business School

Topping the table for the most female students on an online MBA program this year is Suffolk’s online MBA, priding itself with 59 percent female students in its 2020 cohort.

The school scored high in class experience, offering its students 12 concentrations and over 100 electives to choose from to tailor their MBA experience to their interests.

Throughout the course, students have the opportunity to work remotely on over seven different client projects, developing strong business acumen and the skills necessary to be successful in the business world.

Kicking off our top 10 is Aston Business School, international students making up 53 percent of the 2020 cohort.

The school offers six MBA intakes every year to ensure that the program is widely accessible to a wide range of candidates, regardless of personal and professional commitments.

The program is completely online and features several UN Sustainable Development Goals in its curriculum, such as Good Health and Well-being, Industry, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The inclusion of these goals helps students become responsible leaders.

Tuition is US$24,245.86.

=8) The Robert Gordon University Aberdeen Business School

In joint eighth place is Aberdeen Business School’s online MBA, with 69 percent of international students in its 2020 cohort.

The program focuses on practical teaching to give its students advanced leadership skills and an in-depth understanding of different areas of business. Participants have the option to choose a specialization, such as the MBA Oil and Gas Management specialist course, to tailor their curriculum to their interests.

This year, the program has a very small student cohort of only 26 students, but they do have one of the highest averages for work experience – 14 years. 19 percent of students identify as female.

The program takes an average of 33 months to complete. Activities include two-and-a-half hours per week of lectures, webinars and 32-48 hours of practical classes or workshop in the final semester.

Tuition for the program is £20,000 (approx. US$25,096).

=8) Birmingham Business School

The second school in joint eighth place is Birmingham Business School. Its 33-month online MBA program has 69 percent international students in its 2020 cohort.

Birmingham’s online MBA provides a combination of academic research, practical teaching and integrated online live conferencing sessions. Corporate social responsibility, sustainability and multiculturalism are recurring themes throughout the program, helping students tailor their business knowledge to the issues of contemporary times.

Birmingham Business School offers three MBA intakes per year. Tuition is US$26,716.03.

7) Bradford School of Management

Bradford School of Management offers a 36-month MBA with four yearly intakes in January, April, July and October. The program has a high percentage of international students: 76 percent in the 2020 cohort.

Tuition is £18,296 (approx. US$24,245.86). Bradford students have the option to take two international modules through the university’s Dubai Hub at no additional cost.

The program received a good score for class profile. Out of the 2020 student cohort, 31 percent identify as female. Participants have an average 13 years’ work experience.

=5) SBS Swiss Business School

In joint fifth place for most international students is SBS Swiss Business School. Its multicultural program boasts 79 percent international students, 52 percent of female students and a high score for the class experience indicator.

This year’s cohort has 53 students who have an average 9 years’ work experience. The program takes 24 months on average to complete.

There are 15 modules on the SBS online MBA, each taking eight weeks to complete. Aside from traditional e-teaching, students can participate in a wide range of webinar sessions and online forums to boost their curriculum.

=5) Warwick Business School

Halfway through our list in joint fifth place is Warwick Business School, with 79 percent international students in its medium-sized cohort of 367.

Pietro Micheli, Course Director for the Distance Learning MBA and Professor of Business Performance and Innovation, said: "We are looking for driven individuals who will add their own unique perspective to create a diverse cohort in terms of cultures, professions, sectors and experience."

The online MBA program received high scores across the board in our rankings, taking on average 30 months to complete.

Warwick’s program is undertaken primarily online with two residential weeks and an optional face-to-face module. Students who are interested in the ethics of business can take part in specialized courses such as Business & Sustainability and Leadership.

4) Imperial College Business School

In fourth place with 80 percent of international students on its online MBA program is Imperial College Business School, which scored highly in employability and faculty and teaching.

The 24-month program received a high score for class profile. Tuition is £29,500 (approx. US$39,093.40).

2) IE Business School

In second place for cohort diversity is the Global Online MBA at IE Business School. The program earned the top spot in this year’s ranking, cementing its stance as the best online MBA program for yet another year, with a perfect score of 100 for employability and class experience.

Out of 71 students in the 2020 cohort, 86 percent are international, and 34 percent identify as female. Participants have an average of 10 years’ work experience.

On average, students complete IE’s online MBA in 18 months, making it the second-shortest program on the list.

Teaching is comprised of theoretical and practical classes and requires a high level of interaction, allowing students to gain new business perspectives.

In ninth place for online MBA programs with the most expensive tuition is Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona’s online MBA.

The program offers six starting date options per year and six areas of concentration for students to tailor their curriculum – Entrepreneurship, Finance, Healthcare Management, Management and Organizations, Privacy and Security and Marketing.

Students also have the option to participate in international travel with full-time MBA students.

Out of the 2020 cohort of 108 students, 31 percent are women. The program takes on average 30 months to complete.

Halfway through our list is the online MBA from Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. The program scored highly for employability and received a perfect score for class experience.

The 54-credit online MBA is highly customizable, thanks to seven specialization options, and is delivered through three integrated course sets: business foundations, key business functions and the future of business.

Aside from online classes, students can network with their peers, faculty and staff in two week-long residencies where they can gain invaluable hands-on experience by solving live business cases.

5) MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business

Halfway through our top 10 list for employability is MIP’s iFlex MBA, which received a high score of 76.83 out of 100.

The program focuses on the development of technical and soft skills through analytical and practice-oriented teaching. Students have access to AI mentoring tools, personalized learning platforms and online networking opportunities with alumni and professionals in the business world.

In 2019, MIP revised the online MBA portolio and added new courses about innovation and entrepreneurship to provide students with more top-notch business skills.

Federico Frattini, Dean and Professor at MIP, said: "The whole portfolio was revised to be able to accelerate the growth of managers and entrepreneurs, to give candidates the opportunity to become real agents of change and innovation in their companies and organizations.

Narrowly missing out on a top 3 spot is the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) online MBA at the University of New South Wales Business School. The program received a very score of 81.21 for employability and high scores for the class experience and class profile indicators.

The online MBA has a flexible teaching format where students can specialize in different focus areas such as technology, social impact, innovation, and corporate responsibility and accountability. The program offers optional face-to-face courses and access to career support, which is key to student success.

After the success of the MIB Challenge, students in this year’s Digital MBA (DMBA) program also have the opportunity to take part in this type of challenge so they too can gain a genuine understanding of how a business is operated and managed.

Industry visits with digital leaders

Theoretical knowledge can only go so far. Experiential learning experiences give clarity and help students understand how business and management concepts are put into action, and industry visits definitely accomplish this.

DMBA students at ISDI have the unique opportunity to gain genuine insights into how the industry works from digital experts at global companies, such as Google, LinkedIn and Amazon.

As you become more aware of the industry’s regulations and practices through these types of visits, the more prepared you will be to enter the job market after graduating.

Professional networking opportunities

You generally don’t need to get more than a paragraph into an article about an MBA before finding the words “network” or “networking” – and it’s all for a very good reason.

Your MBA experience goes beyond the one to two years of coursework. An MBA is where you’ll join a worldwide network of industry professionals and professors. Do one-year specialized business degrees have the ability to disrupt the business education status quo? A report published by the General Management Admissions Council (GMAC) in April 2019 found that, for only the second time in the last decade, 47 percent of candidates prefer the idea of pursuing a one-year MBA compared to 45 percent who would prefer to study a two-year MBA program.

One-year study formats with integrated international study and work experiences are becoming increasingly popular, so we spoke with Katherine Campbell and Samy Ahmed, both graduates of the M.S. in Global Commerce at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce about their experiences and how the M.S. in Global Commerce is making waves in the world of business education.

You can earn two degrees and one certificate within a year

There’s often a lot of talk about how the graduate job market is getting more competitive each year. As a result, many prospective students want their degree to offer unique learning opportunities, from internships with global organizations, to innovative technologies that offer the most up-to-date learning experiences.

While some institutions offer the opportunity to study a dual degree or double degree, there aren’t many that offer the possibility of graduating with three qualifications – all within the space of one year.

Bringing a fresh twist to the business school education landscape, the McIntire School of Commerce allows recent graduates with relevant undergraduate business degrees to earn an M.S. in Global Commerce from the University of Virginia in the United States, as well as an M.S. in Global Strategic Management from ESADE Business School in Spain and a certificate in International Business from Lingnan (University) College in China. Phew!

Before you’re even accepted onto a particular graduate business degree program, you’ll be expected to have at least two years’ worth of professional experience under your belt.

Although it’s not impossible to get the experience before embarking on further education it can be a relief to learn that some graduate business degrees, such as the McIntire’s School of Commerce M.S. in Global Commerce, require little or no work experience at all.

After graduating from the M.S. in Global Commerce in June this year, Samy joined Lenovo as a Senior Global HR Strategist as part of the company’s Global Future Leader Program – a five year-long accelerated leadership development program.

“I joined this tech giant three months ago and embarked on an eight-week business trip across the globe to recruit top talent to support our organization.

“I have a very hectic schedule that really excites me. Today I’m in San Francisco, tomorrow I could be in Chicago, Beijing or New York City!

“I have to credit McIntire for the two main skills I use on a daily basis at work: being very flexible and open-minded.”

Samy says that at Lenovo, new technologies are rolled out every month. “Being able to quickly adapt to new changes represents a big competitive advantage you need to succeed in such a fast environment.

After graduating from the M.S. in Global Commerce in June 2018, Katherine began her career in consulting, moving from from Charlotte in North Carolina to New York City, where she now works as a financial services consultant for Ernst & Young.

When asked how the M.S. in Global Commerce has contributed to her career, she told us: “The program is all about adaptability, which is something that has been significantly applicable during my time in consulting.

“On the more technical side, I've used many of the concepts taught in the Excel course on a daily basis on my current project,” she adds.

Many people plan on going to business school only once, so it’s essential you’re well-informed and choose the right one. But what are some of the key things you should bear in mind when it comes to choosing a business school that can determine both your professional and personal development for the years to follow?

We’ve teamed up with Montpellier Business School to find out.

Consider the cost and location

For many, the decision starts and ends with the cost of tuition. The decision whether to relocate also plays a large part in the decision-making process.

Many major cities around the world are known for higher cost of living, but there are locations where opportunities and quality of life are just as good and come without the heavy price tag.

If the idea of studying abroad in France intrigues you, you may be pleased to learn that living costs in Montpellier in the south of the country are 30-40 percent lower compared to the capital, Paris. The city of Montpellier was also ranked in the top five in L’Etudiant magazine’s student cities 2019 ranking.

It also pays to consider what you want to do after you graduate and where you want to do it. The network you establish during your time at business school can mean lifetime connections.

Know whether you qualify for any scholarships or special funding

Scholarships can be worth thousands and are awarded based on various criteria. The most common scholarships are awarded for academic excellence. Other scholarships include athletic scholarships, merit-based scholarships, and needs-based scholarships.

At Montpellier Business School, for example, extended payment options are available and individual scholarships are awarded up to the value of €2,000 (~US$2,212) according to admission results.

Utilize global rankings

Whether you love them or hate them, rankings can help give a good idea of what the business schools you’re interested in are like and how they compare to other schools.

A school’s reputation for academic excellence also plays a large role in your decision. Only 91 business schools out of 14,000 in the world hold the “triple crown” accreditation from the most sought-after international accreditations: AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS. Montpellier Business School is one of them.

Find out what additional services and support the school provide

Moving abroad to study and leaving your home country behind isn’t always easy. At Montpellier Business School, all international students are offered help and support with finding accommodation and applying for a French visa. Students are also help when it comes to administrative procedures such as opening a bank account or enrolling for French social security as well as free French classes on campus.

And when it comes to the school’s career center, you’re definitely going to want to make the most of it. For example, Montpellier Business School’s Career Centre support students in building their professional career through internships, business cases, seminars, conferences and entrepreneurship opportunities. Be realistic – are the entry requirements achievable for you?

It’s easy to get lost in the myriad of business school prospectuses and all they have to offer. But it’s important to bear in mind what your chances are of being accepted into the school and program of your choice.

Many business schools (but not all), will require you to have a GMAT/GRE test score, proven English language proficiency to a certain level, as well as attend an interview – whether it’s face-to-face or in a video.

At Montpellier Business School, students can opt to study their degree in either English or in French. Before the term begins, international students also take part in an induction week and attend free French classes, so you can make the most of your experience.

Consider the study format

Different schools have different curricula and specializations, so you’ll want to research whether the school you’re interested in aligns with your career ambitions and personal interests.

What do you value the most when it comes to your studies? Are you looking for a management program that places a strong emphasis on all areas of business and leadership? Or are you looking to upskill in finance or marketing? Do you want a curriculum that’s hands-on and offers experiential learning opportunities? Or do you prefer case-method learning and group work?

Or if you’re still undecided, that’s ok as well. Finding a program that’s well-rounded in all areas of business, such as management, economics, finance, and marketing can put you in good stead for acclimatizing to specialized business master’s programs, such as the Master in Management program and Masters of Science program at Montpellier Business School.

The two-year long program offers an optional third year called a ‘gap year’ which can be taken between first and second year. During the gap year, students are encouraged to undertake one or two internships at a leading company in the sector of their choice, anywhere in the world in order to develop their skills, get involved in a humanitarian mission, or even create their own start-up.

Visit the school and higher education fairs and events

Once you’ve narrowed down your options to two or three schools, visiting the school can really help you get a feel for it. You’ll be able to speak with past and current students, as well as professors and other faculty members. It’s also a great way to get a sense of the school’s alumni network and find out about their accomplishments and achievements.

Sometimes visiting the school’s campus isn’t always possible, and some schools take part in higher education fairs and events all around the world. Montpellier Business School, for example, visits places such as mainland China, India, Morocco, Brazil, and Colombia to meet with students and answer any questions and doubts they may have.
