Diverse cities with a strong history make the Midlands an excellent place to specialise

While the region’s largest city is Birmingham, there are plenty of other cities in the area, such as Leicester, Coventry, Derby, Nottingham, Northampton and Wolverhampton.

Each city in the Midlands has its own rich and interesting history; for example, Birmingham is known for its car industry, and Stratford-upon-Avon is the hometown of Shakespeare.

Leicester has a background in textiles, art and design – and it’s also a place of historical significance. The remains of Richard III, the last English king killed in battle, were discovered in a city centre car park in 2012.

Also located in Leicestershire, less than 20 minutes away from Leicester, is the town of Loughborough, home to Loughborough University, which has a reputation for both academic and research excellence.

However, what Loughborough University is perhaps most well-known for is its sporting achievements. It’s an internationally recognised centre of excellence for the study of sport, exercise and health through the natural and social sciences and has even helped train Olympic gold medalists.

Loughborough University is home to the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine, a world-class hub applying academic and clinical expertise to policies and practices which aim to benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Aside from sports, Loughborough University is also well regarded for its design and creative art programme, ranking fifth in the UK and 27^th globally for art and design in the most recent QS World University Rankings by Subject. The Midlands have an abundance of natural beauty

Being a student in the Midlands will give you the best of both worlds. While you can enjoy a bustling city life in one of the area’s many cities, you will also have access to some of the UK’s most stunning countryside for walking, cycling and wildlife-watching.

The Midlands boasts seven Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), stunning landscapes which are deemed precious enough to be protected in the national interest.

Unsurprisingly then, several of the universities in the Midlands boast green campuses, with woodlands, gardens and open spaces. Loughborough University has a 523-acre campus, with beautiful gardens and plenty of places to eat, drink, socialise and relax. In 2018 the university’s campus was awarded the Green Flag status which recognises the nation’s best green spaces.

Neither northern nor southern

The north vs. south divide in England is something university students in England love debating for hours on end.

If you choose to study in the Midlands you get to enjoy the benefits of both, particularly since you can easily access cities in the rest of the UK. The Midlands is very well connected, and it’s extremely easy to get from one city to the other by bus or train.

If you’re interested in visiting London, you can easily do so from many of the cities’ train stations. If you choose to study at Loughborough University, for example, you can get to the heart of London in less than 90 minutes, directly to London King’s Cross St Pancras station. The train from Loughborough also goes direct to Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Sheffield, Leeds and York.

Plenty of job opportunities

Because of their diverse, successful history, the Midlands boasts industrial and commercial strength. Today the Midlands is an economic hub, providing plenty of job opportunities to graduates from the area’s universities.

Loughborough University’s Leicestershire campus is home to the Loughborough University Science & Enterprise Park (LUSEP), a world-class science park containing offices for over 90 organisations and more than 2,500 people. These companies range from start-ups to global organisations and hire many graduates from the surrounding universities.

Applying for an accounting and finance master’s: Q&A with programme director

We spoke to Professor Andrew Marshall, Programme Director in the Department of Accounting and Finance at Strathclyde Business School, to find out what drives students to choose the school for master’s study.

Tell us about accounting and finance at Strathclyde Business School

Strathclyde Business School is triple-accredited and is home to a range of MSc degrees in accounting and finance. Our courses cover topics like risk management, investment and portfolio theory, financial technology and quantitative methods.

Students can study a mix of core and elective modules across two semesters, which are taught via lectures, tutorials and workshops. Over the summer months, students complete two research projects, choosing from a broad range of topics covered on the programme, and supported by an academic supervisor.

The first semester focuses on building core skills and knowledge in accounting, statistics, international financial markets and financial mathematics. Semester two allows students to build a specialism, applying the core competencies to different specialist streams.

Our graduates go on to work in corporate finance, security analysis, portfolio, treasury or derivatives management, and options and futures, to name a few. Employers include Goldman Sachs, Blackrock, Morgan Stanley, UBS, Lloyds Group, IBM, PWC and more.

What do you think potential applicants should be aware of?

Our students have studied a variety of subjects at the undergraduate level which allows us to accommodate different abilities, skills and learning rates, but several of our courses are quantitative and so it’s beneficial for students to have some numerical or quantitative skills before starting with us. Although most of our programmes require no prior knowledge of finance.

We also have links to a number of professional bodies to ensure that our courses are related to and informed by real world experience. We have accreditation agreements with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), CFA Institute and the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP).

How is Strathclyde Business School innovating in accounting and finance?

We continuously adapt our courses to reflect changes the field and in wider society. There is growing expertise in the department for banking, FinTech and sustainability, and this is reflected in the courses we offer including increased focus on FinTech innovations, sustainable finance, green bonds, climate change and finance.

We now support the Women in Banking and Finance Society to help to promote and encourage career development for women in the field. The society was formed to create awareness of, and to address, the lack of diversity and gender inequality within the financial services industry. It aims to provide members with guidance and support to maximise potential. We run a series of events for students in conjunction with the society.

We also became an academic partner with GARP in 2021, which will allow us to nominate six students from our MSc Finance programmes to receive a scholarship for the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) part one exam. Recognised in every major market, the FRM is the leading certification for risk managers and is only awarded to those who demonstrate the knowledge and ability to anticipate, respond and adapt to critical risk issues. It’s consistently in demand by nearly every major bank and firm in the world.

What opportunities do your programmers offer students beyond the classroom?

To ensure personal and academic skills development on our postgraduate courses, we have introduced Amplify, an online virtual training simulation for different financial applications. Amplify allows us to provide a week-long bootcamp experience for students, and links in with our university’s careers service to increase the employability of our cohort.

The department has strong links with several employers in the accounting and finance industry and we use these links to bring further opportunities to students at all levels. This includes employer participation in workshops and tutorials, guest speakers and case studies for students. In order to ensure a breadth of opportunities, we link with a diverse range of employers for guest talks, including Johnston Carmichael, EY, and Morgan Stanley.

We also offer a number of scholarships with professional and business organisations including DataLab scholarships for MSc Financial Technology students and CFA scholarships for MSc Finance and MSc Finance and Investment students.

Which business schools are tackling sustainability head-on?

In recent years, business schools have pledged to do more when it comes to the environment and sustainability. One way they have approached this is by introducing sustainability topics into their courses.

The increase in companies involved in sustainable practices is driving the increased focus on this area in business schools. Nalisha Patel, Regional Director, Europe for the Graduate Management Council (GMAC), says: “It is increasingly rare to see a company that does not have some form of sustainability measure. 

“In a study conducted by McKinsey & Company, 43 percent of companies reported that they aim to align sustainability with their overall business goals.  

“The role that business schools play in developing business decision makers is significant and so it’s appropriate that they have evolved to help people understand the complex, often ambiguous, globalised intersectionality of business with environmental, social and geological factors.”

Which schools are incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their curriculum?

BI Norwegian Business School, with four campuses across Norway, is a huge proponent for sustainability, actively striving to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) outlined by the UN through various initiatives and new programmes.

One of these programmes is the MSc in Sustainable Finance which recently accepted its first cohort. The multidisciplinary degree was introduced due to sustainability becoming a core concern for investors and companies. It’s designed to prepare students for positions at the intersection of finance and sustainability.

Associate dean of the programme, Professor Bruno Gerard, says, “ESG factors have become increasingly important in the financial industry and are rapidly becoming a vital part of the investment process.

“Students looking for a career in finance need to learn how ESG issues affect financial management and how financial constraints can limit or support action towards sustainability.”

How is sustainability being integrated into executive education?

In the neighbouring Nordic country of Finland, the Strategic Sustainability for Business programme is offered at Aalto University Executive Education. Co-created with UC Berkeley Executive Education and first delivered in 2021, this programme is designed to help businesses integrate sustainability into their business strategies – something that is crucial for all companies and organisations today.

Speaking on the career paths graduates could pursue, Senior Programme Manager Anna-Maija Ahonen says: “Country-specific legislation, EU taxonomy, expectations of customers, and arising needs to measure GHG/CO2 emissions require a skilled workforce and leaders to drive this change.

“As participants gain understanding of the strategic importance of sustainability and the ability to build a clear roadmap and strategy for sustainable success in their context, they will become key partners and change makers in driving the transformation process within their own organisation.”

Another executive education programme focused on sustainability topics is the Executive Master in Future Energy (EMFE) offered by ESCP Business School. The EMFE is aimed at executives with at least five years of working experience who are interested in the energy sector.

Designed to be a practical course, it will offer relevant and practical expertise that will allow participants to apply their learning during their course and approach the energy sector in a holistic way covering all active forms of energy production.

This blended programme also offers fully online option which gives participants the opportunity to study anywhere in the world.

Why is learning about sustainability important for your career?

ESSEC Business School in France, another country often performing well in regards to sustainability, has developed a brand-new MSc in Sustainability Transformation accepting its first cohort in August 2022. This course is designed to equip future managers with the knowledge, know-how and network they need to have a sustainable impact on their companies and organisations.

Alexis de la Tour du Pin, Executive Director of the MSc in Sustainability Management, says, “We believe the job market has reached a tipping point: the pressure to be more sustainable has pushed organisations to empower CSR teams and consultants to adapt their business models and upskill their employees.

“The result is a shortage of all-around talent with a systemic vision of sustainability challenges, from understanding technical implications to strategic and financial impacts, and communication tactics. As an MSc in Sustainability Transformation graduate, you can pursue a wide array of careers related to sustainability across numerous fields of activity in multiple industries.”

France is also home to emlyon business school which runs a recently launched specialised master’s in Energy Transition Management. Xavier Blot, Programme Director of Master’s, says: “It is very important to have specific programmes like this where you can mix different disciplines to make sure future generations will find concrete solutions to answer every issue, whether it is economic, industrial, social or environmental.

“In an increasingly climate and energy-constrained environment, making organisations evolve towards sustainable and low-carbon activities becomes crucial.”

Another programme launched in September 2021, across the Channel in the UK, was the Master’s in Energy Systems Management at Durham University Business School. Graduates from the programme will have an appreciation and understanding of the balance between the technical engineering and business aspects of future energy projects.

Joanna Berry, Co-Director of the programme, says, “The Master of Energy Systems Management programme will provide students with world-class, research-led teaching and learning about the most up-to-date issues affecting energy management and energy management systems.

“It will also introduce them to a wide range of globally respected and world class industry contacts, cultivated and curated very carefully to ensure their experience at Durham is underpinned with an international perspective and a fully commercial understanding of the priorities and urgencies of climate change.

“Sustainability is not a simple concept; business needs to be financially sustainable; the planet needs to be ecologically sustainable, and communities need to be psychologically and environmentally sustainable. This triple bottom line needs to sit at the heart of every business decision.”

The top UK universities leading the way for sustainability

As we move into 2022 – with more young people standing up for their futures and holding businesses and influential leaders to account – educational institutions are slowly and surely building sustainability and climate issues into their everyday fabric.

In the last weeks of 2021, student campaigning network People & Planet published its annual university league table assessing 154 UK universities on their environmental and ethical performance. The league scored universities against 13 criteria including energy sources, sustainable food, reducing carbon and sustainability strategy, to see which institutions are on track to meet their environmental targets.

Universities no longer need to share their environment and sustainability data but People & Planet’s University League Manager, Jack Ruane, understands that reliable sustainability credentials are vital for students when choosing a university to study with.

So what are universities doing to play their part in the fight against climate change and is it having an impact? We spoke to the three top ranking UK unis to find out.

#1 Manchester Metropolitan University

With a high score of 86.3 percent in the People & Planet university league, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is fuelling real sustainable change in higher education.

Initiatives include a comprehensive carbon management plan to drive the university towards zero carbon emissions by 2038, a student-led sustainable food network, electric vehicles, a carbon literacy programme for staff and students and a £4.1m state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell innovation centre.

“Sustainability forms an integral part of everything that we do, from our teaching and research to the way that we build and use our campus,” says vice-chancellor, Professor Malcolm Press. “We know the environment is one of the top concerns for people of all ages and [ranking first in the People & Planet university league] demonstrates the pivotal role that sustainability plays in university life at Manchester Metropolitan.”

Students are being listened to when it comes to environmental issues too. According to the MMU carbon management plan, nine in 10 students believe sustainable development is something their university or college should actively incorporate and promote, while 91 percent say they are fairly or very concerned about climate change. The university’s response – real action.

MMU have maintained a top three position in the sustainability university league for eight years but know there is much more to do. The university aims to be a global leader, paving the way for others to create sustainable change. A spokesperson said: “Our forthcoming sustainability strategy will outline our ambitions for the next five years and will include our plans to continue embedding climate education into our curriculum, achieve impact towards sustainable development through research, and provide leadership for our students, staff and the wider society.”

#2 King’s College London

Following behind with a score of 79.5 percent is King’s College London, a university committed to making a difference in the world through research, education and service to society, according to Professor Shitij Kapur, President & Principal of King's College London.

In 2021, King's stopped using fossil fuels almost two years ahead of target and emissions have been reduced by 53 percent since 2005. As the institution works towards a net zero carbon target, it plans to engage all its communities to help achieve this goal. The King’s Climate Action Network gives all students and staff an opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of a climate action plan and take meaningful steps towards climate crisis solutions.

“We recognise that maximising our positive impacts is as important as reducing our negative impacts. I am extremely proud of the enormous efforts of our students and staff who are dedicated to championing environmental and social sustainability across King’s.” Professor Shitij Kapur said.

King’s has skyrocketed to second place after ranking 21st in the previous People & Planet university league in 2019 and a cornerstone to their success is their dedication to sustainability through education.

There are now over 100 modules related to sustainability and climate change across the university, including a newly launched online module called ‘Sustainability and Climate’, available to all students to help understand how climate-related issues are relevant to their degrees, work and career goals.

“Our ranking in the People & Planet University League reflects the wider commitment and progress that King’s has made to maximise our positive impact across our university, and we will continue working with our students and staff to create positive change,” said Director of Sustainability Kat Thorne.

#3 Nottingham Trent University

Meeting challenging targets to reduce their environmental footprint, embedding sustainable development into the curriculum, and delivering sustainable research are just some of the reasons why Nottingham Trent University (NTU) sits comfortably in the top three sustainable UK universities for 2021.

Other initiatives at NTU include a dedicated Energy Team who help to reduce the emissions of the buildings on campus, a waste hierarchy which ensures 99 percent of the university’s waste does not get sent to landfill, and a Green Rewards programme where students and staff can earn points for undertaking sustainable behaviours.

Charmaine Morrell, Head of Sustainability at NTU, said: “we empower our students to take control of their learning and enable them to experience life beyond the lecture hall.

“There are 14 student societies dedicated to sustainability within the Nottingham Trent Students Union and students can become Eco-Ambassadors, joining a network of other sustainability minded students helping us to work towards our carbon emissions and sustainability goals.

“The title of ‘top three’ is external recognition that signals to our colleagues, students, and the wider community that we take sustainability seriously at NTU and that we are good at it. However, there is always more we can do and having very many exciting plans and impactful projects in place for continued successful outcomes.”

Do universities have a responsibility to protect the planet?

Along with many others leading sustainability efforts within higher education settings, Morrell at NTU believes that universities have a huge responsibility in protecting the planet.

“Operationally, they are big businesses which have high energy demands, generate mass amounts of waste and undertake large scale construction projects. Universities also work with external partners, suppliers and investors who have their own environmental footprints which can be influenced,” she said.

“But in addition to their direct impacts, universities play host to millions of young people and employers, teaching their community critical skills and values. They are also hubs of innovative research, which can transform how sustainability is applied across the globe from technical breakthroughs to behavioural developments.”

Beyond recycling schemes and limiting plastic use, universities are embedding sustainability and environmental goals into every aspect of life from the energy used on campus to the curriculum they teach and the partnerships they build.

Making the decision to study for a master’s qualification – an MBA, MSc or MA – can be a challenging task. Questions that you often go through include:

Which school or university is the best?
Which specialization suits my needs?
What is the duration of the program?
How will the master’s qualification improve my career?

If you’re starting out on the journey towards finding the right master’s program, here are some stages to follow:

1. Choose a university

Choosing the right school or university for study is absolutely crucial. The reputation of the establishment, its links to the industry, its ranking and its overall standing, are some of the factors that you will need to consider. Every school will offer the best they have to attract and enrol students. What is crucial from a student perspective is to see the reputation of such establishments both in terms of the academic sector, and the industry you want to work in. Try to find a school that the industry recognises as a place that maintains both quality and consistency of academic provision.

2. Decide on a specialization

As well as considering the school as a whole, you also need to choose a specialization for your master’s program. If you want to study a master’s in management, for example, which part of management are you really interested in? Is it finance? Marketing? Leadership? Entrepreneurship? Your choice of specialization should be based on the interest you have in a field of study. Having a passion for a subject will help you study it better, manage time pressures during the period of the course, and help you succeed in that area.

Another element to consider is whether the curriculum has an international or global edge. For example, in the Les Roches MBA program we have introduced a two-week study trip to Chicago as a way to enhance the international skills of our students. During the trip students will visit different organizations, spending time with their management team, and then return to the classroom to reflect on how practice fits theory and vice versa. In last trip in July 2015, we visited 14 different organizations and discussed strategies with their executive teams.

3. Consider the length of the program

Another important factor is the duration of the master’s program. There are programs that can run for six months or a year, 15 months or even a two-year period. The duration very much depends on the school’s accreditation. On average, for different master’s programs the minimum time is around a year or 14 months if they have a dissertation component. Choosing a master’s program under a year in length runs the risk that it will not be recognized or respected.

4. Investigate the curriculum

Once you have made a decision about the program you want to study, get in touch with the school and speak to the course manager of the program. Take the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the subjects covered, assessment strategies, and the logic behind the curriculum offered. This will give you the information you need to confidently make your choice.

5. Think about your career prospects

Having a master’s qualification will help you enter the employment market on a different footing. In these days there is increased graduate competition, and you need to be persistent, choose the right company and prepare to be humble at the start of your career. A lot of students want to immediately enter their dream job. That can, of course, happen depending very much on the skillset you have, the leadership style that you implement and the knowledge you have gained. However, getting your dream job also depends on your ability to communicate, as well as the reputation of the school or program you have studied.

In sum, choosing a master’s program is one of the most crucial choices that you have to make. When making your decision, try to choose a school which is global, has a sound reputation in your industry, offers a wide range of subjects within its curriculum, and also shows a student-friendly leadership style.

There’s a reason why over 30,000 students move to Finland to study every year and it’s not just to see the Northern Lights.

As Finland continues to dominate rankings of the world’s best countries for education, healthcare, and quality of living, it’s apparent other nations around the world can learn a lot from the country that has a lot to offer.

We spoke to a few international students from University of Eastern Finland (UEF) to find out what they’ve made of their study experience in the Nordic nation so far and what attracted them to study here in the first place.

Student-centered learning at the heart of Finland’s higher education system

When it comes to higher education, Finland is an outside-the-box kind of thinker and is renowned for its innovative and forward-thinking ways. Its flat hierarchy encourages a more equal student to professor relationship, while independent learning is very much encouraged.

Freedom and equality also play an integral role in Finnish higher education – something that’s particularly prominent at the University of Eastern Finland.

“Studying at UEF feels like nothing I’ve ever experienced before in terms of learning environment and teaching methods,” said Romanian student, George Cosmin Porușniuc who is currently studying the International Master’s Program in Information Technology (IMPIT).

“The curriculum is very flexible, and you basically get to decide what courses you take in order to fulfill your credit requirements.”

Vietnamese student Le Than Phuong is also studying for her master’s degree in Environmental Health and Technology at the University of Eastern Finland. She told us how she enjoys the freedom and informality of the Finnish education system offers.

“We can organize our studies to fit our own schedules and desires. But freedom comes with responsibility, and students need to study by themselves,” said Le Than, who also appreciates the various ways in which classes are taught.

“I love the multi-methods of teaching which use different tools, such as lectures, videos, and online teaching which helps students learn a lot better.

“Group work is another thing I like about studying in Finland. There is a lot of group work which prepares us for working life,” she added.

It’s all about trial and error

For many international students whose first experience abroad is to live and study, it can be difficult to adapt and become familiar with new customs and cultures – whether you’re in the classroom or out and about in the local town.

During class, students are encouraged to be active and not be afraid to speak up. Considering how students and professors are on first-name terms with one another, it can make the whole learning experience feel much more personal and relaxed.

“Mistakes are normal and acceptable because each failure is a chance for you to learn something and gain new experiences,” said Vietnamese student, Le Phuoc Thao Nguyen who’s currently studying the Master’s Degree Program for Research Chemists.

Taking the time to enjoy and appreciate what’s beyond campus boundaries

In between lectures and studying, the opportunity to explore what’s practically on your front doorstep is undeniably tempting.

Although George hasn’t seen much of what Finland’s wintry wonderland scenes have to offer, he’s still in awe of what he has managed to glimpse so far.

“It’s just amazed me how beautiful some of the landscapes are that I’ve seen on bus journeys!

“I can only imagine how amazing it’s going to be when I go to visit the Koli National Park, or Rovaniemi (the home of Santa Clause) . Visiting Rovaniemi is a must and I’m planning on doing so as soon as possible,” said George.

“I remember the first snowfall I experienced here, I was ecstatic,” said Ria Talukder, who’s currently studying the Master of Science in Photonics.

“As far as outdoor games are concerned, I tried skiing and sledding, and it was so much fun. Now I’m planning to try skating as well.”

Adapting to the challenges that come with the 21^st century

Those who have the opportunity to live, work and study in Finland are exposed to an entire new way of living, and it’s noticeable how proud the international students we spoke to were of the healthy work-life balance embedded in everyday Finnish life.

Studying in Finland also means you’re entitled to Finnish Student Health Services (FSHS) – although you will need to have paid your Student Union membership to access them. Some healthcare services however, such as dental treatment will have additional fees, although they do tend to be very reasonable.

There are also many other student discounts available for students, regardless of whether you’re an international or home student, a master’s student or bachelor’s student.

What’s more, in 2020 the University of Eastern Finland will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. To help celebrate, all international master’s students who commence their studies in September 2020 will be eligible for a partial tuition fee waiver.

In recent years the importance of wellbeing and productivity across all areas of life has received increased focus, not just in the classroom, but in the home and workplace too.

One university in Mexico has sought to address this trend by becoming the first in the world to develop a scientific master’s program focused on these areas.

Based on scientific research, the Master in Positive Leadership at Universidad Tecmilenio teaches students to build character-strength-based teams in order to have a positive impact on both society and productivity.

What are character strengths and what are mine?

At the beginning of the 21st century, scientists discovered 24 character strengths that give us all our very own unique character profile. These character strengths fall under six categories:

Wisdom (using your experience and knowledge in order to make good decisions and judgements – examples include creativity, perspective, and curiosity)
Courage (being able to control your fear in a difficult or dangerous situation – examples include bravery, perseverance and honesty)
Humanity (simply being human – examples include social intelligence, love, and kindness)
Justice (being fair in the way you deal with people – examples include fairness, leadership, and teamwork)
Temperance (being in total control of your own behavior – examples include self-regulation, and forgiveness)
Transcendence (experience that goes beyond normal limits, or the ability to achieve this – examples include hope, gratitude, spirituality, and appreciation of beauty and excellence)

It is believed that focusing on your strengths and developing these as opposed to tackling your weaknesses is better for your happiness, productivity and engagement levels.

In a recent interview, the Director of Universidad Tecmilenio’s Institute of Happiness and Wellbeing Rosalinda Ballesteros spoke about turning negatives within your team into a positive, and how doing so can help achieve better results, as opposed to “constantly correcting mistakes and trying to correct what is lacking.”

This area of psychology, known as ‘positive psychology’, is at the heart of the Master in Positive Leadership at Universidad Tecmilenio. Students study a variety of modules and develop their knowledge of social wellbeing, positivity leadership, the benefits of positive relationships, as well as their understanding of happiness and wellbeing tools.

The Institute of Happiness and Wellbeing at Universidad Tecmilenio aims to ensure positivity and wellbeing is an integral element throughout the university, such as the training and coaching sessions based on positive psychology.

A recipe for success

The power that comes with understanding the 24 character strengths and the part they play in every individual’s life is important for workplace productivity. Organizations, managers and leaders are beginning to implement strength-based approaches within the working environment in order to help employees feel happier and more engaged in their roles.

As human-beings, we’re hard-wired to overlook our positives and focus solely on our negatives and how we can better those. This is where strength-based approaches come into play and help individuals, teams and organizations achieve higher levels of happiness and content, and they ensure the overall company culture can thrive.

Playing to your strengths: How it works

There are a variety of strengths we can focus on to ensure positive wellbeing in the workplace, from personal strengths to team strengths, organizational strengths to leadership strengths.

Should you aspire to become a manager or leader, focusing and maximizing on the latter – leadership skills is one way to do this. When it comes to leading a team, there are times when things will go wrong and you need to think carefully about how you address such issues with your employees.

Instead of automatically focusing on the negative, you should instead draw clear lines where things can be improved. Giving feedback should be constructive and lead with an explanation of how things could be done better in future, instead of pointing to where something went wrong.

Definitive goal setting is another way to help boost employee happiness and productivity. While goals should still be challenging, they should be attainable and achievable.

It’s apparent these character strengths have a real impact, and so it’s important research continues into finding out more about them, how they can be used to their full potential, the influence they have, and how they ultimately contribute to a positive and happy workplace.

Consider the cost and location

For many, the decision starts and ends with the cost of tuition. The decision whether to relocate also plays a large part in the decision-making process.

Many major cities around the world are known for higher cost of living, but there are locations where opportunities and quality of life are just as good and come without the heavy price tag.

If the idea of studying abroad in France intrigues you, you may be pleased to learn that living costs in Montpellier in the south of the country are 30-40 percent lower compared to the capital, Paris. The city of Montpellier was also ranked in the top five in L’Etudiant magazine’s student cities 2019 ranking.

It also pays to consider what you want to do after you graduate and where you want to do it. The network you establish during your time at business school can mean lifetime connections.

Know whether you qualify for any scholarships or special funding

Scholarships can be worth thousands and are awarded based on various criteria. The most common scholarships are awarded for academic excellence. Other scholarships include athletic scholarships, merit-based scholarships, and needs-based scholarships.

At Montpellier Business School, for example, extended payment options are available and individual scholarships are awarded up to the value of €2,000 (~US$2,212) according to admission results.

Utilize global rankings

Whether you love them or hate them, rankings can help give a good idea of what the business schools you’re interested in are like and how they compare to other schools.

For example, the QS Business Masters Rankings 2020 consider five main criteria: alumni outcomes, diversity, employability, thought leadership and value for money.

A school’s reputation for academic excellence also plays a large role in your decision. Only 91 business schools out of 14,000 in the world hold the “triple crown” accreditation from the most sought-after international accreditations: AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS. Montpellier Business School is one of them.

It’s also a top 15 business school in France and it’s Master in Management program is ranked as the 77th best of its kind in the world in the QS World University Rankings: Masters in Management Rankings 2020.

Find out what additional services and support the school provide

Moving abroad to study and leaving your home country behind isn’t always easy. At Montpellier Business School, all international students are offered help and support with finding accommodation and applying for a French visa. Students are also help when it comes to administrative procedures such as opening a bank account or enrolling for French social security as well as free French classes on campus.

And when it comes to the school’s career center, you’re definitely going to want to make the most of it. For example, Montpellier Business School’s Career Centre support students in building their professional career through internships, business cases, seminars, conferences and entrepreneurship opportunities. Be realistic – are the entry requirements achievable for you?

It’s easy to get lost in the myriad of business school prospectuses and all they have to offer. But it’s important to bear in mind what your chances are of being accepted into the school and program of your choice.

Many business schools (but not all), will require you to have a GMAT/GRE test score, proven English language proficiency to a certain level, as well as attend an interview – whether it’s face-to-face or in a video.

At Montpellier Business School, students can opt to study their degree in either English or in French. Before the term begins, international students also take part in an induction week and attend free French classes, so you can make the most of your experience.

Consider the study format

Different schools have different curricula and specializations, so you’ll want to research whether the school you’re interested in aligns with your career ambitions and personal interests.

What do you value the most when it comes to your studies? Are you looking for a management program that places a strong emphasis on all areas of business and leadership? Or are you looking to upskill in finance or marketing? Do you want a curriculum that’s hands-on and offers experiential learning opportunities? Or do you prefer case-method learning and group work?

Or if you’re still undecided, that’s ok as well. Finding a program that’s well-rounded in all areas of business, such as management, economics, finance, and marketing can put you in good stead for acclimatizing to specialized business master’s programs, such as the Master in Management program and Masters of Science program at Montpellier Business School.

The two-year long program offers an optional third year called a ‘gap year’ which can be taken between first and second year. During the gap year, students are encouraged to undertake one or two internships at a leading company in the sector of their choice, anywhere in the world in order to develop their skills, get involved in a humanitarian mission, or even create their own start-up.

Visit the school and higher education fairs and events

Once you’ve narrowed down your options to two or three schools, visiting the school can really help you get a feel for it. You’ll be able to speak with past and current students, as well as professors and other faculty members. It’s also a great way to get a sense of the school’s alumni network and find out about their accomplishments and achievements.

Sometimes visiting the school’s campus isn’t always possible, and some schools take part in higher education fairs and events all around the world. Montpellier Business School, for example, visits places such as mainland China, India, Morocco, Brazil, and Colombia to meet with students and answer any questions and doubts they may have.

And if prospective students can’t attend a fair, some business school organize webinars and create their own online fairs instead.

Situated in northern Italy, Padua has been a top study destination since its university’s establishment in 1222. The three-century long rule by the Republic of Venice ensured the freedom of teaching, research and study which attracted many of the best scholars and students from all over the world. Not to mention its stunning blend of culture and architecture, along with some of the best food and drink in the world.

To find out what else makes Padua an attractive study destination for international students, we spoke to a few of them from the University of Padua to find out.

An exciting city with a small town feel

“There’s always something to do, and you will quickly feel at home in Padua's historic streets,” said US student, Ysadora Ashton Mirabelli-Montan, who’s studying the Master’s degree program in Italian Food and Wine.

Stylish boutiques along with independent cafés, bars and restaurants are often frequented by the young and hip student population in Padua. Within the university campus and beyond, there’s a real sense of international community here to make you feel at home in no time – no matter where you’re from.

30 percent of the local population are students, so it’s safe to say Padua is very much a student-centered town with lots of things to see and do, according to Ysadora: “There are all types of entertaining places where you can spend time with friends.”

Music lovers can also rejoice as Padua plays host to a myriad of concerts and music festivals: from trap music to opera, jazz to pop, many national and international music artists are invited to perform in various locations around the city throughout the year.

Both the city and university of Padua are home to over 20 museums between them. Padua also boasts Europe’s first university botanical garden, Orto Botanico di Padova, which was established by the University of Padua in 1545.

Padua is no stranger to olde-worlde markets either. Each day you can pick up fresh fruit and vegetables in abundance, or root your way through the flea market for excellent vintage finds.

It’s home to Italy’s second oldest university

Founded in 1222, the University of Padua is one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Its range of multidisciplinary degree programs, many of which are taught exclusively in English, attract hundreds of international students to study here each year.

“I chose to study here because the program has courses that fit my needs and interests and there are opportunities to perform research here,” said Greek student, Christos Giannakidis, who’s studying the Master’s degree program in Physics.

The university’s distinguished reputation for research and world-class teaching staff also make it an attractive option for students from both home and abroad.

“I chose to study at the University of Padua because it’s one of the best universities in Italy and it had my desired master’s program,” said Astghik Stepanyan, an Armenian student who’s studying the Master’s degree program in Medical Biotechnologies.

“The professors are great, intelligent and always try to improve themselves according to students’ requirements,” she said.

The University of Padua also boasts its very own ‘Buddy Scheme’, where international students on their Erasmus, exchange or full degree course can be paired up with a master’s student at the university who is there to help them with any query or issue they have about university life.

And for those who are looking to up expand their language repertoire, the university’s Tandem Face2Face program is a great way to do this. The language learning scheme lets you partner with another student whose native language is different from yours, enabling you both to develop your language skills.

The food and drink is enough to write home about

Padua is allegedly where Aperol, the key ingredient to the world-famous ‘Aperol Spritz’, was invented.

“Spritz is the best drink I have ever tasted,” confessed Ysadora.

It’s a local evening tradition for groups of friends and couples to enjoy a glass or two of Spritz in one of Padua’s piazzas, and this makes for a chilled and relaxing atmosphere across the city.

There’s more to life in Padua than Aperol though. Studying and living in Padua means it won’t be long before you’re sampling some of Italy’s finest cuisine. From pasta to pizza, gelato to coffee, the Italian food scene will always leave you wanting more.

It’s a bike-friendly city

Padua is a city that loves to cycle. With almost everyone taking to two wheels to get around the city, it’s enough to give the likes of Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Oxford a ride for their money (pun intended).

“It’s a beautiful city, and the roads are almost always flat so you can cycle around easily,” said Astghik.

Although, this doesn’t necessarily mean everyone follows the rules of the road. Be sure to keep your cycle helmet nearby as you embark on your leisurely cycle rides, whether it’s to your 9am lecture or an afternoon chill in the park with friends.

Situated on a series of mini islands in the south of Finland, the country’s capital city Helsinki may not be the most obvious study abroad choice. However, this is a city which ranked in the top 60 in the QS Best Student Cities 2019 ranking, and which boasts a world-class university, an outdoor lifestyle most people could only dream of, and fantastic quality of life.

If you need any further proof that Helsinki must be doing something right, consider the fact an impressive 10 percent of its student population are international students.

We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to speak with two of them from the University of Helsinki to find out what attracted them to study in the Finnish capital and what their experience has been like so far.

Home to a world-renowned university

Finland’s academic reputation is renowned worldwide as it prides itself on innovation, pioneering research and collaboration with industry.

In fact, the University of Helsinki, a leading multidisciplinary academic research institution, took top spot as the best university in the country in the QS World University Rankings® 2020.

Canadian student, Eva Miras, is a Master’s in European and Nordic Studies student and shared with us how she came to choose studying in Helsinki. She said: “I knew that I wanted to do my master’s degree in Europe, so I started looking at diﬀerent programs in various countries, and it was the Master’s in European and Nordic Studies that ﬁrst caught my eye.

“I also learned more about the University of Helsinki and found that it had a really good international reputation, and learned that the education system in Finland is considered one of the best in the world, so it was a no brainer.

When it comes to Eva’s academic experience so far, it’s evident that the level of support and access to services has been nothing short of impressive.

“I’ve been able to take so many interesting courses with some of the best professors and researchers in the country, and have learned so much in the process.

“The university provides students with almost endless amounts of academic resources and support to help guide your studies, and there is always help available to you if you need it,” says Eva.

A unique and innovative teaching style

Finland’s education system is admired around the world. For many international students, the innovative teaching style may come as a shock to begin with, but it soon becomes a unique and pleasant learning experience.

“The teacher-student ‘gap’ is almost zero, meaning the teachers are very approachable and open to great conversations both about and outside of the studies,” explains Chaitanya Bhargava, an MSc in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology student from New Delhi.

Students who study here are encouraged to embrace new learning methodologies and techniques. Sometimes students will be working and learning alongside peers from other classes in completely different countries via Skype, for instance.

Field trips, learning diaries, lab work, hackathons, and even participation in research groups are also part of the academic experience. Such academic freedom means opportunities for development are in abundance, but it does come with a price – as students are expected to manage their own workloads and work independently.

Breath-taking nature spots around every corner

If you’re a fan of long, hot summers then Helsinki may not appear to have much to offer you, but don’t write off the idea of studying here straight away.

“The direct connection of the city to dense thickets and beaches is something I admire as I don’t have that in my home town,” says Chaitanya.

Whether you’re a fan of relaxing on the miles of beach and coastline that surround Helsinki, or hiking to your heart’s content across the country’s breathtaking national parks, there’s always something somewhere for you to enjoy during the university break or at weekends.

“It’s all easily accessible from the city, with endless coastlines, islands, beaches, lakes, forests and natural parks to visit,” says Eva.

It’s more affordable than London, Dublin, Amsterdam and Paris…

… according to Expatistan’s Cost of Living Index. This is especially true if you’re an EU/EEA citizen – as EU/EEA citizens are exempt from paying tuition fees. In 2017, the Finnish government introduced mandatory tuition for students who live outside the EU/EEA.

However, even with the cost of tuition you can still live affordably here. Cost of living in the city is still comparable to other major European cities – you just need to know how to budget and how to budget well.

The cost of rent followed by groceries and entertainment are the biggest things to consider when living in Finland. Setting a budget, as well as saving up before arriving is usually the best way to ensure you have enough funds for the year.

To make it easier for international students to relocate to Helsinki, the University of Helsinki reserves a number of rooms and studios from Unihome and HOAS for bachelor's and master’s degree students who are moving to Finland.

Although cost of living tends to be higher in Helsinki, crime rates are very low and public safety threats generally come from the country’s wildlife rather than crime – so beware of moose on country roads and highways!

Students also have access to cheap healthcare (including dental care), as well as cheap student lunches and heavily discounted public transport.

It’s one of the best student cities in the world

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, Helsinki is making waves in the academic rankings, and when it comes to student cities there are no exceptions to that either.

“I really enjoy living in Helsinki because it’s a small enough city to easily get around (the public transport is amazing), but it’s still big enough that there is still so much to see and do.

“Helsinki is a great city for students because of its active student life with no shortage of things to do no matter what you’re interested in,” says Eva.

Finland dominates rankings and indexes around the world

Finland is officially the world’s happiest country … again. After taking the title for the second year in a row, many other countries are looking to Finland to try and understand what it is that makes Finns report the highest levels of happiness in the world.

Having never visited the country before or studied outside of Canada, Eva was more than open to whatever studying in Helsinki brought her way:

“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came to study in Finland.

“I came here with no expectations and an open mind, and I have been pleasantly surprised ever since. Even with no expectations, my expectations have somehow been exceeded!” says Eva.
